"Shoot, even when the fights are good, even great, a little controversy goes a long way with boxing fans. Take the first Pacquiao-Marquez fight. We witnessed a Mike Tyson-esque display of explosive offense from the PacMan and Joe Frazier-esque heart and grit from Marquez, who kept getting up from knockdowns in the first round. We saw a courageous clinic put on by Marquez from round two through the middle rounds before Pacquiao dug deep and rallied late. Yet all anyone wanted to talk about (or ***** about) was Burt Clements 10-7 score of the opening round, because that score made the bout a draw instead of a win for Manny. Fans saw elite talent, skill, and heart and incredible drama, but all they wanted was a “win.”

That fight taught me how ridiculous boxing fans truly are. And Pacquiao-Morales I and Diego Corrales-Jose Luis Castillo I, which took place the following year, only supported my opinion that many boxing fans and industry folks are untreated mental patients. Those two fights were as good as boxing gets in terms of sustained action, evenly matched world-class competition and drama, but after Morales-Pacquiao at least one-third of the emails I received went on about the brand of gloves Manny was forced to wear. Can you believe that? It’s true. And after Corrales-Castillo, which was the f__king fight of the decade, all I heard about was how the late Chico spat his mouthpiece out twice in that unbelievable 10th round."

    He's so ****ing right.

Yeah, but those are the lowest denominator boxing fans. Some of the best boxing fans and boxing judges on this fight (Big Bone, IB, etc) scored this fight for Marquez. 65% of the community here thought Marquez won. 15% thought it was a draw, and 20% thought Pac won. Yeah, we saw a great fight this Saturday and we should be pleased about that, but I don't feel like a mental patient if I believe the rightful winner got shafted because of boxing politics... again.

He's an arrogant twit though so I could not care less that fans annoy him about things they justifiably find controversial.

:good He also boycotted the fight b/c it wasn't going to be competitive in his opinion.

Stephen Edwards has had a couple of great mail bags on this subject as well regarding fans over reacting and how a other fighters will generally side with the underdog. He also made a slight comparison of this fight with Taylor-Hopkins I.

Kind of odd, this fight wasn't much different than the first two fights, where you could've scored the win for either fighter, but people didn't as strongly after either of the first two fights as this one. Pac being so much more of a bigger star, and Marquez seeming so much more faded really created a contrast coming into this fight and think emotions just got jacked.

An excellent post, and I agree very much with the sentiment. Especially the last sentence.

Not true: he predicted a 9th round ko for Manny - but that it would be competitive along the way.

I read most of his mailbags. He clearly stated many times that making Marquez come up to 144 was wrong and he did not think it was going to be competitive.

The guys just a straight up arrogant ***** when it comes to boxing.
Boxing fans are hard to deal with no doubt. But writers like him and Kim are worse to me. Instead of reporting and promoting the sport they try to promote themselves and own agendas.
