I dug Tapia Tough as nails lunatic with some fine skills. His lack of power and generally mental approach to ring-generalship started to become issues once he moved up past superfly, but he was still a very good Bantam.
He's one of the few fighters whose regular Tuesday night makes an ODLH Saturday night bender in his hotel room look like a preschool play.

How could anyone not love this guy? A tremendous fighter. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h7FlkSJ8Qgc[/ame]
I thank you Sir. If there ever was a mix between the best attributes matched evenly of a fighter between the 1. Slickness of Pernell Whitaker the 2. Determination of Julio Cesar Chavez and the 3. Flambouyant manner of Roy Jones Jr. it would be in the form of Johnny Tapia! Great fighter! A pleasure to watch! Was never disapointed in a Tapia fight, ever! :good
Tapia helped rewrite the stereotype about the Mexican fighter. He was a mediocre puncher, and preferred being slick and fast, and still managed to be consistently thrilling. I have pro's ask me all the time how they can be crowd pleasers when their style is to outbox and befuddle a foe, and every time they ask, I point to Johnny Tapia. He was fun when he won, fun when he lost(rare), and didn't need big knockouts and knockdowns to do it. He might have more rounds of awesome than almost anybody else. I wish him and Ayala had a third fight...They were 1-1 in reality, it should have happened.
