Nice to see Jimmy talking to Howard after the fight. Goerge was NOT tired late in the fight. He was looking as fine a fighter could look against a prime Young. Young was hurting him bad leading up to the knockdown. Foreman was not shell of himself, or damaged goods after the ali loss, he was just in against a guy he couldn't hit most of the time,a and when he did hurt him, Limmy came back strong. What a beautiful fight.
Watch Foreman's legs. He had none about the 9th round and was talking 5 or 6 ministeps to balance himself. He had to reset constantly and it was something he never did early in a fight. And George's punches were wider and wider and he looked a lot like the version in the 8th round against Ali.
If this post is making any kind of refernce to the possibility that the heat in that arena had some kind of effect on Foreman, remember, it was just as hot for Jimmy Young.
In my opinion, the second tier of ATG. Think about the top guys that Young beat, and then do the same with Holyfield. Jimmy compares pretty well, based on that crriteria.
You must remember,Cobra, that Ali and Jimmy had air con in their corners,in Kinshasa and Puerto Rico. George did n't.
Not at all. Foreman had more in the tank than Tyson of 96 & 97 but beating Qawi, Bowe, and even having a close rematch with Lewis are MUCH better than whatever Young did. Young was "good" and Holy was a "ATG/great", they're not even close.
What it had to do with was the statement that Foreman was not tired in the fight. Incorrect. Now I realize most people don't even bother to watch or gauge a guy's legs. I do. Even the top half of Foreman was tired that late in the fight and Jimmy was actually tying him up and he sure was not doing that earlier in the fight when George was muscling him around. Young had the superior gastank and everyone knew it going into the fight. But George was exhausted and fought until his tank was empty. There was nothing left but a competitive spirit. If it was 15 rounds, Foreman does not make it out of the 13th.
I'm thinking, specificaly,of Evander's fights in the heavyweight category. Young dropped a controversial decision to an out of shape and past his seventies best (agreed) but still crafty Muhammad Ali,beat a prime, although, out of shape George Foreman, and dropped another disputed decision to an only JUST past his prime Ken Norton. Only Lennox Lewis at that stage in his career is comparable from Holyfield's resume. I'm not denigrating 'The Real Deal's' win in the second Bowe fight, but Riddick was hog fat in that one.
Well he did beat Earnie Shavers, Buster Mathis, Joe Bugner, Oscar Bonavena, an aged Ellis and ALMOST beat Foreman, which as you say should be taken into consideration when judging fighters as well.... So truthfully, he wasn't that bad..
He's yet another from that era who could have been champion if he'd come along later on. Ron did very well, considering the quality of fighters around at that time.
i love watching Jimmy Young box, sit there all day & night. If he got W over Ali or Norton like he clearly deserved he'd have a much higher ranking , top 10 all time h/w which is where he belongs IMO.
First, two caveats: 1) I don't believe Foreman was in as much danger as most people think. 2) Foreman fought a weird fight that night. With those out of the way, you make a good point. Lyle's showing against Foreman was fairly impressive. I'll give him points for Shavers, too, although he got bounced around in that one as well. Bonavena was a bit past his best, as was Ellis.
Philly's greatest heavyweight! Tear down the Rocky statue and put one up of Jimmy Young, the man that never avoided the punchers, and the man who tamed the beast and took the greatest to school.
