from the scene.. This content is protected Undefeated WBA "reagular" heavyweight champion Alexander Povetkin (22-0, 15KOs) is continuing to train hard for his scheduled defense against Cedric Boswell on December 3rd in Helsinki. Povetkin is pleased with the early date of his first title defense. The boxer plans to enjoy the holidays and then he's going to return to the gym to begin training for a career-changing 2012. Povetkin wants to face IBO/WBO/WBA/IBF champion Wladimir Klitschko in 2012. Twice in the past, Povetkin was in line for Wladimir, but the Russian Olympian wasn't ready. Now he believes that he's gained the necessary experience to give Wladimir a real fight. "I am pleased that I'll be able to rest on New Year's Eve. Shortly after the fight [with Boswell], I will have some important dates. First, the birthday of my girlfriend, and then my beloved daughter. After that will be holidays, and then I'll spend time with my friends and socialize. But, I want to stay in the best shape possible for any upcoming fights. The main objective for 2012 - to enter the ring against Wladimir Klitschko," Povetkin told journalist Dmitry Grebenshchikov.
I saw this on the other sight. Povetkin needs to fight Wlad. All right, he got a free paper belt, and I don't blame him a bit for cashing in with a phony defense. But he has a serious credibility issue than can only be solved by stepping in with a man who he has avoided twice, and who, by the way, owns the real WBA championship. After that, I got no problem with the man. Always liked him. But get in the ring with Wladdy and take your lumps.
I used to like Povetkin, but his avoiding Wlad has caused me to lose my respect for him. He's the epitome of a "paper champion". Perhaps now he's being pressured by people in Russia to go ahead and fight Wladimir in 2012.
I really think it all depends on who his mandatory is after the Boswell fight. If it's Rahman lol, I expect him to "defend his title" at least one more time. If it's Helenius, I expect him to go for the probable loss that will bring in the most money and does the least damage to his reputation... So then he'll probably chose the Wlad fight. And there's always the chance he runs again and vacates the belt :yep
Well he has to face Boswell and then his mandatory Rahman (ffs!) hopefully it happens after that. I think he can only hold his belt for just over another year anyway before facing Wlad or giving it up. This has always been the biggest fight that could be made in heavyweight boxing since Lewis retired, hopefully we get to see it.
I'll believe it when I see it. I really didn't have an issue with him dropping out. He didn't think he was ready and thats fine. Parading around with that fake trinket like it means something has soured his credibility and made him the ass of many jokes.
:good Povetkin could fight Wlad in 2008 and 2010. He should shut up his mouth. Wladimir is a real Champion. Povetkin not.
