duran. ike still does well as a counterpuncher but i feel duran would adjust after feeling his sting, timing his approaches and smoother williams when necessary. Close but clear UD
Ike Williams, much like Paul Williams, his great grand nephew, was an overrated puncher and not really that ducked, in addition to also being vulnerable to lefties and afflicted by priapism and diphallia during several of his training camps. I see an easy night for Duran, who had a serviceable enough left hand and liked priapismic fighters.
Overated ? Tell that to Beau Jack, Bob Montgomery, Kid Gavilan and 58 other opponents he murdered in the 1940s. I saw Williams punch from ringside quite a few times, and when "allowed to" was a devastating puncher as a lightweight. As a welterweight he was less potent, but at his pinnacle, I take him over Duran also at 135 pounds. Ike was considered just "under" Ray Robinson as a puncher. He than got into trouble with the powerful Boxing Guild, and was never the same after....Ike could HIT !
I was leaning toward Ike and Burt makes me lean even farther. It's Ike for my money. Fought better comp at LW at a time when the division was rich with talent. hard to top names like Beau Jack, Sammy Angott, Bob montgomery, Jimmy Carter and Carmen Basilio. It would be a barn burner though.
Ike Williams is the lightweight I would least want to be in the ring with if I was Roberto Duran and I was being truly objective
I like Ike in this one. Williams reminds me of Joe Louis in that he stays back waits for the right molmet to become agresive. If Duran's agresiveness is going to be effective he's going to have to make up 2" in both height and reach. We've seen a more experanced Duran flustred and quit. So even if you beleve Duran has all the physical gifts he lacks them mentaly. If his quitting against Leonard isn't enough to convince you of this let me put forth exibit "b" his low blow after the bell against Ken Buchanan to become lightweight champion (he should have been dq'd). Also exbit "c" Other than Leonard Duran never beat a great boxer in or near his prime. There is no reason to think he'd beat Williams.
You do understand that Duran quit against SRL because he didn't like the clowning that SRL was doing and just wanted to scrap. SRL was moving around and rarely engaging and showboating left and right. That is nothing like how Ike would fight. I can't even really believe you used that as an example. When Duran went up against murderous punchers.... he never once quit and did very well against them sans Hearns. Ummm you do understand that he didn't fight most of the greats you're referring to in HIS prime while they were in theirs. Are you like MAG and you don't understand the concept of prime age and weight?
