I have to second that Ingemar Johansson was a bigger puncher in that era than any of these guys.

Mike DeJohn--fought Machen and Richardson twice each. Did not ko either. Ingo ko'd both.

Williams--Also fought Machen and Richardson. did not ko either.

Valdes--the best of this trio. Shared 7 opponents with Ingo. Valdes went 6-3 with 5 ko's. Ingo 7-0 with 4 ko's. In fairness to Valdes, he did stop London on cuts and he did stop Friedrich. But he failed badly against Machen.

Ingo's ko's of Machen and Patterson put him a solid notch above this group.

Ernie was 6-5 or 6-6, and Liston still looked big in the ring.

I saw more "fighting" going on in this "sparring" session than in some of the hvywt. fights we see today.

Thats how I see it also.

Ingo is better than harris, radmacher and london in the same way folley was also better than valdes, williams and dejohn.

The best fighters patterson could ever have fought as a champion was ingo, machen and folley. You can bundle dejohn, williams and shot valdes into the same group as the guys patterson did defend his title against.

It's the stylists Sonny would have to worry about. The likes of Ali, Tunney, and Welliver.

And yet he """"""lost""""" to Ali... Yeah right sure he did. That's why when they polled people who were actually in attendence for the foney fight #2 they couldn't find a single one who actually believed the infamous Phantom Punch was real.

On what basis do you rate Williams superior.

The only argument I can see is that Williams managed a draw with Machen.

A question--Name the fighters who were actually rated when Williams defeated them? The only one I can think of who probably was rated was the fringe contender Billy Daniels. Ernie Terrell had not yet broken into the ratings. Can you name anyone who was rated in the top five at the time Williams defeated them?

Williams simply didn't fight many top men and gets pumped up pretty high for failing to get past the third round twice against Liston. Frankly, I thought he had one good round against Liston.

Valdes, on the other hand, fought a lot of top men and defeated several of them. Charles, Neuhaus, Jackson, Cockell, and probably a couple of others were at least rated when Valdes defeated them, and a few were in the top five.

On balance, I think Valdes was by far the more proven top fighter.
