I've already seen plenty of Rosas, Flea. And he pales in comparison to this guy:

    Leo Santa Cruz

There's currently a cacophony of sub-25 year old ''prospects'' ranging from super-fly to bantam, the likes of the aforementioned Daniel Rosas, Cesar Seda(alright, 25, but you get what I'm saying), AJ Banal, Hugo Ruiz and so forth(and don't give me all that Koki Kameda stuff, he's a champion, so was knowingly omitted).

Probably the most promising, most proven even is the Cameron Dunkin managed, Rob Palmer top 15 ranked Leo Santa Cruz. Having turned pro 5 years ago at eighteen, he's amassed a record of 17-0-1, and is coming off a trio of extremely impressive performances.

He burst onto the scene in March of this year, in the fight that initiated the aforementioned trio of wins, in a fight against Stephane Jamoye. Jamoye is well known amongst British fans for pushing Jamie McDonnell to a disputed majority decision win in an EBU title fight, and had also dropped another razor thin fight to Tomoki Kamdea, coming off the short end of a split decision in Japan, so he was expected to give the fan friendly 'Teremoto' a difficult fight in his first step up in class.

Jamoye brought his usual come forward style and refused to take a step back against the then 22 year old Mexican, which turned out to be a recipe for disaster as Santa Cruz had all the ingredients to make a painful night for the game Belgian. Much more physically imposing, Santa Cruz utilised his soon to be patentend body-orientated assault and pounded Jamoye round after round culminating in a sixth round stoppage off of a body shot. By all accounts Leo was surprisingly dominant, showing a varied arsenal and an impressive punching form/technique, which led to his handlers deciding he could be put in with more proven opposition sooner than anticipated.

So up next was former world title challenger Jose 'Carita' Lopez, who had been in with more than good company, holding wins against the likes of Omar Soto and Juan Alberto Rosas, while also having given a good account of himself against Fernando Montiel. Obviously past his best(coming off two losses to Marvin Sonsona[who he pushed close] and Cesar Seda) but by no means shot, he offered Santa Cruz a rather stern test that Teremoto passed brilliantly. In a mature display where he used his jab and right hand to great effect from range and his body attack on the inside, while maintaining his tight guard, he grinded Lopez down and finished him off with a flurry along the ropes in the fifth after Lopez had reacted oddly to a right hand-straight left combination, seemingly having taken a shot to the eye.

Santa Cruz has built on this form and in his last fight overcame another former Montiel victim in Everth Briceno, who had recently challenged for Omar Narvaez' WBO title.

The Nicaraguan enjoyed some success in the early going when he was able to hold his ground in centre ring, but as is becoming his custom, Cruz' body shots made Briceno's lack of constant movement a bad idea, as he found his rhythm after the first few rounds, pushing Everth around the ring and laying into him against the ropes. Briceno offered stern resistance though, despite losing by a wide margin, taking Santa Cruz further than he had ever been in his career, into the 11th. The punishment told though, and after taking a knee 31 minutes into the fight, the referee stepped in to save a brave Briceno after a follow up attack.

Perez recent stoppage win, I like the way he can change the course of a fight within one punch. Many would of panicked and started smothering work and trying to bulldoze in. He kept calm saw the body was there and took it. A fair bit to work on but he's decent this kid..

That's a good win for this stage of his career Mand :good

The lad shouldn't even have that draw on his record, looking at boxrec it could have being a No Contest.

:good Yeah totally agree Ish, Silly ruling. The win over Hernandez is a good yardstick. He really pushes prospects like Molina does. Gets the odd win from time to time. 'Gutcheck win'

Anybody else seen much of this dude? Carlos Buitrago, a 21 year old from Nicaragua officially listed as a straw but looking to campaign at light flyweight. Not really beaten anyone barring a few solid-ish Central American journeyman, but he's looked one of the better untested prospects all the same.

Pretty lucid in there ring, very relaxed, likes to come forward in a non-reckless fashion for the most part as he allows shots to float over his shoulders while stalking his man with a fairly versatile jab that he can use imposingly or merely to cloak a right hand that will follow. A very sneaky left hook to the body too, usually when countering a right hand. He'll get under it and whip the shot into the sloar-plexus, odd for an orthodox fighter to land a lead hook to the middle of the body, but what'evs. Appears to know how to cut off the ring on top of that, though that may be due to opposition having not-so magnificent movement.

I have about 3 of his fights that aren't on YouTube, which I'm hoping to upload later on(getting Perez-Agbeko II and Perez-Mabuza up atm).

Michel Soro, 22 years old, Light Middleweight from France and is 18(11)-0-0. Is untested really but his last win was a 6 round stoppage of Sergei Melis which is comparable (on the surface at least) to Dimitri Pirogs effort in 2010 which was another 6th round tko just before he iced Jacobs.

    Update on my guys:

Hairon Soccaras's record now features a draw 4(4)-0-1.. Drew to a 1-1 guy in his last fight courtesy of a final round knock down scored against him. Not promising, he was the one I was least pumped about.

Eddie Gomez improves to 7(6)-0 with a 5th round TKO over a poorish 6-1 opponent.

Fidel Maldonado Jr picks up the WBC youth title in only the second time he's gone the distance with a UD over the teak tough only once stopped Puerto Rican journeyman Eric Cruz. Some cause for concern would be the rather close scorecards, despite scoring a knockdown.

For those that are interested, we get to follow Eddie Gomez's progress since his fights seem to be aired in Puerto Rico.

Overall a solid performance, but can't help but point out some flaws here. I don't want to see you going the way of your Haitian counterparts, Eddie! Quit working in spots, I want to see more intensity than this. This fight had a sparring feel to it.

I felt like his most impressive round apart from 5 was the second where he countered most of the ambition out of his opponent. Yet through 3 and 4 he's in first gear rather than really capitalizing. I'd also like to see him following behind the jab, theres no good sticking a jab out there if you're not going to use it to measure occasionally. Don't just throw a jab, throw a left hook behind it. Throw a right hand. Don't wait for spots to counter or simply throw lead rights/left-hooks. Theres more than one way to skin a cat, lets mix things up.

Garret Simon 5-0-1 (4). 20 year old cruiserweight. He fought a scheduled 4 rounder on an ESPN show nearly two years ago so some might have seen him before. Not sure why he was so inactive last year. Fights again later this month - first time since April.
