to have recognized the greatness of Joe Louis, Ray Robinson, Archie Moore, Dempsey 'n Roberto Duran if you ONLY saw these bouts:

    Louis-Schmelling I
    SRR-Ralph Tiger Jones
    Moore-Patterson
    Dempsey-Tunney I
    Duran-DeJesus I

Fantastic question John, and the answer for me is a definitive "no."

Context is everything, and so easily forgotten here. This would be a decent thread for those little shits in the General Forum, but use modern names in place of these, as they probably wouldn't know who any of these guys were.

Diogenes has found an honest man, s

Think anyone will have a credible rational for seeing beyond those bouts?

I think one might see glimpses of greatness yet to come in the likes of Robinson against Jones or Duran-DeJesus, but that's such a tough call.......it could just as easily be a no-hoper on his best night in those instances. Look at Adolfo Medel against Robin Blake, or Mark Medal against Hearns......the list is endless, and as many club fighters have their fondest memories in fights like those as all-time greats who would rather forget them altogether.

Thanks, VJB. Surprised the thread hasn't caught on.

That remains to be seen, but at the moment it's difficult to imagine based on those performances, some of the guys more than the others, though.

If those were the only fights i'd ever see from them, and had no other knowledge...

I'd probably say they mostly look like solid to very good fighters with flaws and in need of refinement.

Ray might come off worst as that bout was a slopfest from what i remember.

Didn't see the no at the bottom at first, MB. Was anxious to hear the glimmer of brilliance you spotted below a lackluster performance.

It depends, someone who's seen only those bouts may have a greater understanding of the technical aspects of boxing, they may have boxed and know what's going on in the boxing ring. Where as someone who's seen far more boxing but doesn't know what to actually look for may have a lesser knowledge

EDIT just read the full question, the answer is no you can't recognise a fighters greatness by only seeing the worst of them

I dont think its possible for anyone to recognise their greatness from only ever seeing these fights.

Not Arcel, not Futch not Stewart and not even lefthook.

This thread makes me think about one or two fighter - such as the likes of maybe Jack Dempsey or Jack Johnson where too many under sell them simply on the basis of not having seen them in their best fights or having only seen them in some when heading for the slide - great thread JG
