Manny Pacquiao vs Juan Manuel Marquez 3: A Retired Judge's Take

From what I understand the HBO poll was of ringside media.

To go further than the HBO poll, the articles I read from those at ringside depicted that most at ringside had Marquez winning and alot of those by wide margins, and those that did'nt have Marquez winning had it a draw as the HBO ringside media poll shows.

I read a couple of articles where the author said he could'nt find a single boxing journalist at ringside that had scored for Pacquiao and that most were shaking their head in disbelief at the decision.

 

Fair enough. I didn't watch the fight until this past weekend. So, I deliberately tried to avoid many of the threads and coverage after the fight aired originally. Although, I couldn't help but dip into some.

That is precisely my stance as well. You and I differ on the opinion about how much Marquez was landing. Thats the heart of the matter, so to speak.

I am not sure what your point is. If Pac outlands Marquez, is that not a relevant aspect when you score the round? I did not see Marquez controlling the pace of the fight. Pac waited for and tried to create openings, leaped in, landed, got out. Nice use of lateral movement. But it can also be slized and dized the way you do, saying Marquez forced him back. It is a complicated sport, really.

If that is true Marquez won. But thats not what I saw. To get any further on this issue we would have to discuss this one round at a time. I would have done this if I had the time, but I dont.

Oh, please. Fact this and fact that. Argumentation likes this makes me suspect you understand little about the issue. Wlad was frustrated because he was unable to KO Haye. Pac might have been frustrated because he was unable to win in a convincing manner. This point is just as bad as if I would have said that Marquez face was busted up. And Marquez feeling robbed is part of the script, when those two duke it out.

 

Marquez showed a good chin. I'll give him that. Pacquiao clipped him pretty good. He was on the run a lot.

And that was the worst footwork that I've seen from Pacquiao in four years or so.. jumping around, flailing his legs. He would have been better served using economical footwork.

 

Marquez is a top-notch fighter who made multiple mistakes when he moved up in weight to fight Floyd. So, the second time around he rectified these mistakes and handled the weight properly. Floyd is not faster than Manny, so what you saw was Marquez making adjustments to his timing, that JMM would have given Floyd a much different fight.
Consequently, he made a good showing, better than people expected and still lost. Manny won 116-112 and Chuck Giampa has always been a rebel without a cause.

 

Marquez was VERY tensed at Pacquiao's feints, just like Floyd would be.

 

I think Marquez disagrees with you. I bet if asked who is faster he will say Mayweather.

 

This just means judges have their own preferences when judging.


Do fighters have a say on choosing the judges? If I were Marquez I would choose someone like Giampa who appreciates my style.

I think it lends credence to the power, torque and effectiveness of Pacquiao's connects in comparison to Marquez.

For the most part I think the majority of Pacquiao's connects had that type of torque and intensity behind it, and the reason being is that he did'nt have a good gauge of Marquez distance and movement for him to get off with force with his feet planted.

 

I see Marquez winning by 3 to 4 points too

 

Did anyone asked why he retired?

I asked him and he said he cannot see.
