How shot do you think Roy Jones is now after recent fights?

I certainly won't run from this thread.I haven't got involved in the personal stuff but I resent your implication that the only person who knows boxing is the one who agreed with you and focuses much of his post on Calzaghe.I have tried to remain balanced and have clearly indicated that the main reason I admire Jones is for his outrageous talent and skill rather than his resume.
As for the main question, yes,he is badly shot and has been for many years.I have no intention of getting stuck on Joe Calzaghe here, but I have to disagree that most people thought he(RJJ) was the favourite.I remember (at least as I saw it) that the widespread concensus was that the fight was at least six years too late and personally, felt let down that Joe was speaking of it as his defining fight.I always felt he had far too much for RJJ at that stage of their respective careers and the fight had rendered itself meaningless by the time it happened.
I have also tried to acknowledge that part of Roy's problem was a lack of defining challengers and fights admitting that he may well have grown stale long before Ruiz.
Please do not come back at me with a pro-Calzaghe rant here as I have nothing but respect for the guy despite my misgivings over many of his career choices.
Roy is shot and has been for nearly a decade. The damage may have been done long before Tarver and I don't see the problem with giving him his due as one of the most naturally gifted boxers of the modern era.

If Jones was so shot, how come he beat Tarver at first ask?
Went the distance with Tarver in the 3rd fight when Tarver was the man.
Jones scored 3 victories between Tarver 3 and losing to Calzaghe, beating an undefeated SMW contender and Trinidad.

So answer if Trinidad was a good win for Hopkins and Wright, so why not Jones?

If Jones was able to dominate Sheika so easily, why did Sheika give Diaconu such a tough fight. It looks good on Jones doesnt it?

Jones put Hopkins down with a legal punch that Hopkins couldnt continue with when recieving. If Hopkins hadnt of convinced the ref it was behind the head, that would have been a KO win for Jones. Would you have called Hopkins shot then? Would it have been a good win for Jones?

Jones was ahead on one card against Lebedev going into the last round and Lebedev fought undefeated CW champ Huck to a SD. Does this look bad on Jones?

Lebedev beat Toney for every minute of every round but Jones fought competitively however you scored the fight. Does this look bad on Jones?

Now ive not called Jones prime but asked with this run how shot do you really think he is?
Could it be that Jones chin let him down as it nearly did against Del Valle? Who isnt recognised as the biggset puncher.

Now very few have answered the questions and have just tried to say Jones is shot rather than answer, so for the fools that didnt pay attention at first ask, try again :good

Why do you say Jones was shot at Johnson? When Jones first fought Tarver he won and was coming off his biggset victory. A KO loss doesnt mean someone is shot. Jones was favourite going in and had won the first round. Was Duran shot after a KO loss to Hearns? NO.

If Jones was so shot, how come he beat Tarver at first ask?

I broke down a lot of nonsense in this thread, but loss my post. I'll just say this...

Reggie Johnson was not shot when he fought Jones, past his prime he was, but look at his record... at the time, he was robbed in his last loss and destroyed a good champion to win the LHW title -- at the time he was one of the fighters that people were looking for Jones to fight. All of RJJ lhw victims were cracking fighters, except otis (dude was a freaking cop rofl), Kelly, and imo Telesco, that dude sucks, even if he was ranked.

Old Jones, the people he was fighting sucked horribly, were retired or on the verge of retiring, or shot to pieces who never achieved anything. Lacey hadn't done anything, never did anything, was also overrated, and went on to do nothing and beat no one of any value after getting whooped by calazghe. And trinidad, guy had been retired for years, fighting in a weight class that is far removed from his prime weight. terrible fight. The only time Jones had any success in his later career was when he fought semi-retired fighters.

The only fighter of note in the 2nd list is Lacy who only had pedigree at SMW with wins over world rated Vanderpool, world rated Tsypko, world rated Pemberton and world rated Reid

  11. stupid question but what do you expect, he should have never cut back down from heavyweight its dangerous to do so, as lewis was the real champ at the time it made sense for him to retire but hey this is boxing.

After the Ruiz fight he wasn't the same. Just look at Byrd going down in weight losing to George. It was catastrophic. Rj and Byrd in there primes beat Calzaghe, George, and Green. Rj can't fight at the world stage anymore, but anything below that he is still competitive.

All one needs to do is watch his fights then and compare to his recent fights. He hasnt had a real meaningful win in ages. Has lost to all sorts of guys who he would have demolished in his prime. I hate to say it , because the man has every right to keep fighting, but he has tarnished his legacy in a big way.

Should have called it quits after he beat Ruiz IMO. That would have been one great untarnished record :good

I don't rate lacy, he is horrible, especially in the time that Jones fought him. Lacy didn't have a left hook anymore, hadnt won a fight in years.

Hanshaw would be beat by most of the guys in RJJ LHW reign, Skeika was semi-retired and retired after the fight.

Although one fighter who Jones rarely gets credit for, who was a really good fighter was Jorge Fernando Castro... in his 18th pro fight.
