Well, he sure isn't around Oscar as much as Cinnamon is. Ortiz makes it known that Oscar is like God to him. Khan keeps his name out there on his own so he doesn't need to have a man crush on Oscar. Lara seems to just do his own thing. Guess he's not with the popular kids.
GBP's job is to change that. Top Rank is where it's at. I remember when Margarito was unknown. Arum went every where telling everyone this was the most feared guy in the division until Tony developed a decent fanbase. Arum got a guy like Clottey fights with some big names. GBP is a joke when it comes to developing talent. Guys like Khan, Ortiz, would actually be bigger names if they were on Top Rank right now. GBP is only good with talent that already made a name for themselves.
smell the roses, moses. Promoters don't always sign fighters to make big money off them. They use them as credible opponents for the real cash cows and then **** them over. The Clottey example is proof. He beat Cotto, u know it, everyone saw it. But he got ****ed. As part of the deal, he got a March fight with Manny to go lay down like a dog.
Yeah Top Rank's done an excellent job turning their own Cuban standout into a star, what with keeping him away from the biggest money fight in his division and completely refusing to put fights any place that he might be able attract a crowd.
For the number of fights he's had Rigondeaux is in a good position. He can still fight Arce, wait for Donaire or move up for Gamboa. He'll get his chance.
Was referring to Gamboa. Top Rank is apparently so clueless about what to do with him that he's going to be forced to move up two weight classes to fight Rios.
oh, lol, I forgot Gamboa was Cuban. You're right, Arum stuffed up the Juanma fight. He did seem to favor Lopez over Gamboa too for whatever reason. I don't think he has a thing against Cubans, he's built many stars of different nationalities, and if you look at the young talent in Top Rank's stable it's diverse aswell with a couple of Cubans. Juanma fight could still happen, just with less lustre. There is not much else in his division. Gamboa might have to move up or wait around for a Rigondeaux or a Donaire. There is a lot of risk in fighting a Rios, but then again it could propel him into superstardom and high into the P4P rankings.
Rios is a fun TV fighter but he's no superstar. Rigondeaux is just as poor a draw as Gamboa at the moment (without even having the benefit of a fan-friendly style), and despite having a growing fanbase, Donaire was done no favors by the matchmaking for his last fight. The Lopez fight would have been bigger than all of those, and I think it's just as plausible to believe that the company simply did not want to sacrifice their cash cow at 126 as it is to believe they were just letting the fight marinate. I don't think Top Rank has anything against Cubans, though Arum's refusal to host fights in Miami is a bit odd. I do think however that it's far more difficult for any promoter to do much with someone who doesn't have a natural ethnic or regional fanbase (or at least a very limited one). Top Rank often gets credit for what they've done with fighters who do have such fanbases, but that doesn't convince me that they'd do any better or have any superior strategies for promoting guys who are not such potential attractions in today's market.
Arum takes the long term approach. It hasn't been that many fights ago that we saw Gamboa sitting on the canvas. He has things to learn at the pro level.
