Egan should win but some of the others are tough.
Geraghty has as an opponent former 2004 Olympic silver winner in Worapoj Petchkoom who recently won the South East Asian gold. He would be tough even for Nevin,
Levit is a former Asian Games winner and at the recent World's reached the quarters beating a German and the Americian on the way. Tough for McCarthy.
Sheehan has the Moroccian that beat the Russian favourite at the Worlds before losing to Joshua. Interesting.
DOJ has a good Italian but if he can beat Valentino, he can take this guy.
Cummings has a good Brazialian who won a bronze at the Baku World, beating Ogogo from England on the way.

Ken Egan got Ireland off to a winning start at the Olympic Test Event in London.

The Dublin southpaw, who has dropped back down to light-heavyweight from heavyweight, forced China's Xuan Bao into a standing count with a right hook in the second round of tonight's quarter-final clash en route to a 13-6 win at the ExCel, the venue for boxing at the 2012 Olympics.

He'll now meet Olympic Youth champion, Damien Hooper of Australia, in the semi-finals.

Hooper, who is ranked number two in the world, was beaten 6-1 by Ireland's Joe Ward in the 2010 AIBA World Youth middleweight final in Baku.

The Australian beat Ward in the 2010 Olympic Youths in Singapore, where Ireland's Ryan Burnett claimed gold.

However, Ward broke his left hand in the first round of that clash.

Meanwhile, Declan Geraghty and David Oliver Joyce will be involved in quarter-final duels tomorrow versus Thai flyweight Norapoj Tetchkoom and Italian lightweight Donato Consenza.

Belfast's Conrad Cummings and Tommy McCarthy and Con Sheehan have received byes into Saturday's semi-finals.

Cummings will meet Brazilian middleweight Esquiva Florentino and McCarthy faces experienced Kazakh heavyweight Vassily Levit.

Tipperary's super-heavyweight Sheehan will trade leather with Morocco's Muhammad Arjaoui for a place in the 91Kg+ final.

Have you noticed this is an online boxing thread?? I was being sceptical in my initial post and i'll admit that. I was knit-picking and probably being a bit harsh on the writer, but that's how these ****ing things work!! I pay for the Echo on a daily basis and look out for good boxing news (which it always previously had). Recently i've noticed it's gone downhill (something that will change friday tony mush ). I'm entitled to have my say and these sort of web sites are usually a good place to vent ones frustration....especially as it relates to boxing - not financial crises and middle eastern issues! If you were to compare every little boxing issue people bring up on ESB with global issues then you would be picking up on everything!!! atsch Don't take the moral highground on a site like this....or I will have to think you are a shithead of the highest order!! :smoke

 

Anybody here attending the intermediates and if so, anyone looking like they could surprise a few at the seniors?

 

Any decent heavyweights???Thats a division that is a bit open at senior level with egan dropping back down to his natural 81kilos, Mc Carthy would be a solid favourite but he can blow hot and cold.Maybe a good 69 could spring an upset in a decent group but the rest of the divisions look set for the next year or so.

 

Heavyweight - exactly. Welter is quite strong, just not Olympic strong if you get me. Hard to pick the next champion there from Nolan, Sheahan, Joyce and O'Reilly, but the young lad might just surprise them all. He looked really physical against Sheahan and this might be the right time for him.
