Some of the appeal is gone for now, but it won't last. Boxing fans are notoriously fickle. People thought Tyson actually stood a chance in the second Holyfield fight, despite getting his ass kicked in the first one.
Tyson was a phenomenon, you can't compare that. People also thought he would have a chance vs Lewis, and if he came out of retirement and fought Wlad right now again there would be people who honestly believe he can beat him. That is bc he is a legend and well known even by non-boxing-people. Pac is no Tyson, not even close. Pacs hype was build around him jumping weightclasses and beating up fighters much bigger than him, looking absolutely untouchable in the process. Getting soundly outboxed by a smaller man that his arch-rival toyed with not long ago killed the illusion of the Pacmonster and made him look ordinary and vulnerable, and there is no time to rebuild that hype, it is gone forever. As is the "Megafight" with Mayweather. May-Pac would still be a big event, but not remotely close to what it could have been 2 years ago.
It depends on the promotion. What is said, what transpires. But this is why they need to fight NOW! Not late 2012 after some ****ing tuneups, but asap! If they don't fight each other next, they might as well not fight at all.
I think we are already one step further mate. They should have fought not later than this year, before the Marquez-debacle. Now it is irrelevant if the fight happens next week or next year or never. I really don't care anymore and I know a lot of people who don't. Yeah, I would probably watch it. But I wouldn't be excited about it, it would be just another fight, nothing special.
yup. i was more excited about the prospect of this fight than any previous sporting event , even more so than the Uefa Cup Final in 2008. marquez fight killed a lot of luster for me, also rightly or wrongly i'll give floyd less credit if/when he beats manny after seeing marquez pac 3.
I'm not concerned with there being any lacking of excitement and anticipation if/when the build up officially begins. Once the fighters have their first press conference stare down, rest assured that whatever existing tarnished appeal will replaced with renewed vigor for most fans.
Good posts on this thread.:good It was mostly crossover fans who had it down as a true superfight.The danger was always there that another fight with another opponent would dilute the appeal of this one,hence 2010 was the right year.I always had Floyd winning and that's no attack on Pacquaio,just an opinion.The "counterpuncher weakness" theory is stronger than ever now so in a nutshell,yes it has very much lost it's appeal.I'd rather see Khan fight Floyd,and before I get slaughtered,it's not because I think Khan's great.
Its still a good fight. Nothin has really changed for me. Floyd still got to get in there and beat Pac. He has better skills than JMM but that don't mean he can do it and do it better. Hearns did every single thing better than Duran did. Yet he couldn't beat Iran Barklay in two tries while Duran did it in his only try.
