Considered by many to be the greatest world title fight ever seen in Britain, Nigel Benn versus the American Gerald McClellan ended in such tragic circumstances it has never been broadcast since.

Now, 16 years later, ITV has unlocked its archive to allow the incredible story of that savage night to be told in full.

Nigel Benn, a British paratrooper turned world class fighter, faced America’s rising star Gerald McClellan, one of the hardest punchers in boxing history.

Their lives – and those of many others involved that night - would be changed forever.

A brutal, controversial fight would leave one man mentally scarred, the other seriously injured and the Benn and McClellan camps at war for more than a decade.

Featuring fresh allegations, further twists and the emotional reunion of the two fighters after years of bitterness, The Fight of Their Lives is an unforgettable story that stretches far beyond the ropes of the boxing ring.

I remember watching the fight as a 10 year old, I thought it was over in the first round, Benn deserves huge credit for the way he came back, terrible outcome though.

I almost had a heart attack when Benn won. It was that intense in my house.

Two Ambulances were there that night, They knew it would be brutal!.

Remember it to this day my father screaming at tele for Benn to 'pay him!'. Both men went through so much adversity in that fight.

Benn said it was like being hit with a pick axe when he went through ropes against McClellan.

    Where you there Bunce?
It was the only fight my father (non fight fan) rang me up about and said 'bloody hell, are you watching that fight on the telly?'

That arena was like a beat pit, i loved everything Benn did that night he fought like a British Warrior that he is. Go out on his shield if needs be.

There wasn't one soft scoring punch in that fight every punch was thrown with intent to stop his man.

Before the fight, not many people was picking Benn to win, including my Dad and he was a huge Nigel Benn fan, McClellan wasn't an over hyped yank like Jeff Lacey, he was a spiteful hurtful puncher. If he didn't suffer the injury's he did, he still would have had a very good career, I would have loved to see him v Jones Jnr in their prime.
