Dempsey is a Willie Meehan left over, nothing more, nothing less. Meehan liked black women and Dempsey couldn't handle his style

Burt, I won't troll like PowerPuncher is, but Dempsey doesn't make my top 10 Heavyweights. If I put all the top ten from the original eight divisions in there as well as accommodating the P4Pers who don't rank in the top 10 of any one division (quick example: Pacquiao) then there just isn't room for the Manassa Mauler I'm afraid.

Are you aiming to appeal to the mainstream sports fans and make money or are you looking to create something that hardcore, historical aficionados will respect …that will lose money?

Will you “sell out” and feel the pressure to include a lot of current active fighters for no other reason than to entice Christmas shoppers looking for “stocking fillers” or will you look to teach the curious about the historical relevance of forgotten masters within the sport of boxing?

Will you include a section explaining the relevance of the structures of ruling power and politics within the sport as a back drop to explain certain eras?

Sugar couldn't sue me, he has no copyright over the boxers used and ill be writing it all which I'm sure will be a completely different style to Sugar anyway. Even if he did have the name its easily switched around, ill make it 101 greatest boxers and call the book Boxing 101:D, its a mute point really.

Anyway, as mentioned, i was thinking about doing it chronologically anyway for the reasons mentioned above. I'll wait and see, my publisher gets some say, i ain't gonna let them dictate the boxers or the writing so i may let them decided this if they really want to.

As mentioned, i think the nexct set of boxers included should be:

    Packy McFarland
    Carlos Monzon
    Marvin Hagler
    Jimmy Wilde
    Pernell Whitaker
    Joe Gans
    JCC
    George Dixon
    Gene Tunney
    Charlie Burley

As for Dempsey, i am not a big fan either so when I have a full list with say 20 boxers who are there or thereabouts I can look to make some exchanges. ill get a list of 100 first and then maybes another 30-40 who are behind, narrow it down and then choose a definitive list.

I'm going for the best 100 based on who achieved most, was considered to be the best boxers head to head, based more on ability than say impact or influence on the sport. I will consider any era and any boxer, if they are unfashionable then so be it. If people haven't heard of them then it's an incentive for them to look more into the sport.

It will probably be aimed more at hardcore's but i see no reason to exclude the generals, it will just be harder to market to them which i have no problem with as I have a good background in marketing and enjoy a challenge.

i'm not concerned about making loads of money either, I've pretty much come to terms with the fact that their is not a lot of money in the literary market (unless you are a a mainstream Dan Brown type author) and also that their isn't a great deal of money in the boxing market either.

On the otherside i do have a book deal so i can give my publisher this book to work on whilst i work on other more complex projects. At the end of the day I can't lose money, I just might not make any.

I agree with most of that, and was impressed by the realistic non fanboy like ratings of Tyson and JCC. I'm curious how you have Pep lower than SRL though!

Chavez is too high on that list IMO. He's firmly in the 31-35 camp for me (personally)

I hate Leonard so I decide where I want to put him and then deliberately place him five places higher to compensate for my prejudice.

Great list but Oscar seems a bit high, as does Jack Johnson.

best of luck. an idea I have often liked is a breakdown description or photo sequence describing fighting styles of great champions, categorise them as pressure fighters, box fighters, defensive pure boxers - peek-a-boo, cross arm etc.

I think Hearns, Jones , Griffith should all be there with the name you already have.

Wait untill you get to the 50-100 range and start realizing how small the gap of 20 places really is.
