Flea it all boils down to criteria, you and I know Guzman beats him while high with his eyes closed and Marquez won all 3 fights, but with under certain criteria you can have top 15 of all time. Crazy I know
Yeah, **** him and PowerPunchers constant **** about him. I'm on the Ali Funeka express and consider Guzman a complete waste of time.
While we're at it, let's all view Larry Holmes clearly beat an undefeated Ray Mercer 6-7 years later. Nobody has claimed Larry was at his best in either of the Spinks fights, he obviously wasn't, but he was still a very good fighter and beats 99% of other Heavyweights in '85. There's nothing you or anyone else can say to convince me that Spinks' wins over Holmes were nothing short of spectacular. He was a heavy underdog and he took the fight to the champion. He took the title. The only problem I have with this Flea is that the likes of Yaqui Lopez and Marvin Johnson were both performing excellently until getting stopped. These weren't washed up fighters or anything close to that. Qawi was smack bang in his prime and was conclusively outboxed over 15. Qawi was arguably just as good if not better than Conteh, Galindez, and Saad. No real clear distinction between them all on their best nights anyway, in my opinion.
I would still say Saad beat better versions of all of 'em (bar Galindez obviously) and Qawi beat a shopworn Saad (bad matchup for him though) I'm not saying Spinks' reign wasn't great, it was, but those guys had out their best efforts in earlier. They were not in their primes.
The Qawi win was obviously class though, he'd also came around at the end of all that. As for Conteh, he'd seen better days before fighting Saad (his fight before thatwas a f'n train wreck) but managed to pull it all together one last time. He definitely was past his best when Saad beat him (the first time) but managed to put on one of his best performances. The 2nd fight was an absolute joke, I give Saad little credit for that Conteh was shot to ****.
Perhaps, and I say a prime Qawi would have always beaten Saad and would have done very well against both Galindez & Conteh. The very fact Spinks beat Qawi as comfortably as he did is enough evidence to suggest Spinks was the best of the lot. But yeah, the division wasn't as hot as it's sometimes remembered for the reasons you've already said.
Lopez and Johnson both looked worn imo, performing well or not. That's not to say they weren't still good fighters and worthy top ten ranked opponents though, but they were in the midst of a gruelling series of fights. You also have to consider Spinks being maybe slightly pre-prime(despite his amatuer experience meaning he did get going quickly after turning pro) and not fighting in a particularly complete manner at that point. Most fighters had good rounds against Spinks early, but Lopez and Johnson may not been hit as much, or crumbled so easily in earlier incarnations, once Spinks got to them. Johnson went on for ages after the loss and still had some success during the weaker mid-late 80s period. He never looked quite the same after the Gregory shellacking though imo. Lopez had been borderline dominated by james Scott even before the 2nd Saad fight and been through numerous tough 15 rounders.Spinks just finished off what was left after the legendary 2nd Saad fight, only 3 months after it.Lopez might have still been good for longer if he had taken easier fights to recover, instead of jumping right back in with Spinks.Maybe building up to another world title shot a year or two down the line. Spinks was matched well on the way up, not given too many soft opponents and ready for a title shot after fights like these two.
You really see Spinks' variety In the Qawi fight. There's one sequence where he turns his left hand over four or five times instantaneously and it's a different punch with every twist and hits Qawi in different places on his head each time. Qawi was completely bamboozled.
Yeah, I agree. They weren't prime but they were still very good fighters. Spinks had one of the best left hands I've ever seen. There was nothing he couldn't do with it. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wg3d8NjDSYQ[/ame]
