I thought he'd weighed in a shade over the limit. My mistake. As for the rankings Luf, I'd only rate fighters that were inside the divisions limit. Otherwise they're in the next division.
In Clay Moyles book, it says that Langford weighed 136lbs on the day of the fight. Is that incorrect Senya? Admittedly still more than a lb over the limit at that time (my mistake)
Yeah i'd always heard he was just a pound over too. The problem with that is a common way for champs to duck an opponent was make a catchweight fight a pound over the limit. If a champ gets knocked out by a top contender in a fight set at a catchweight to prevent the title being on the line I can't allow that guy to still be my top man. There has to be some give for times like this in the early days imo but not too much. 137 is closer to the lw division than any other so i'm happy there. Look at some of the early listed champs and they were losing every other fight but kept their belt because it was one or two pounds over the limit. Given those circumstances would you still be staunch in the limit?
Flea, atsch To the nearest 5 137 rounds to 135. That's exactly the reason I chose that number Lw is 135, lww is 140. Anything less than 137.5 is nearer the lw limit.
I actually have serious problems with maths, I was an English prodigy as a kid and couldn't go to school because I hampered other kids learning, although my Mum was told I was (no joke) a completely lost cause in maths. Mum says I'm numerically dyslexic I can't even do simple double digit sums, hurts my head and makes me sweat, no joke :-(
Put the english talent to use! Get a book written about those bloody thai boxers you keep banging on about, or make it specific about say the galaxy brothers Maths is tricky ya know it's either understanding that's inbuilt or it's done by rote.
I see the logic of rounding down to an extent. That isnt how a weight class works though. Each weight class has a max limit, anything over that is in the next weight class so surely anything above today's light weight limit of 135 should not count as lightweight.
Boston Journal: "There was some delay in the men coming on, as Langford was two pounds overweight, as the articles called for 138 pounds, but the slight difference failed to have any effect on the result and Langford is deserving of all the glory that he won." Pawtucket (RI) Evening Times: "The articles called for 138 pounds at 3 o'clock. Gans weighed a few ounces over 135, while Langford was an even 140." Baltimore Sun: "Langford a trifle over 140."
