    RIP Ron.

I was fortunate enough to meet him at the boxing hall of fame a few times, even just last year. He seemed fine and walked and talked fine, even looked good for a man his age.

This news came as a big surprise to me.

That's very sudden. He was looking good just a while ago in interviews. The 70's era heavyweights seem to be fading away with the recent passings of Frazier and now Lyle, both unexpectedly.

It says he died from complications of a sudden stomach ailment.

That's just it. He didn't seem to be at all. A "sudden stomach ailment" is the sort of thing that could happen to any of us at any time. (No correlation between fitness and health, according to pioneering exercise physiologist Leonard Morehouse.) If there's an autopsy, I'd certainly be interested in knowing those findings.
Big Ron has been much appreciated and respected here, and got a tremendous amount of eventful and noteworthy life decades after his death certificate had originally been signed. I'd be delighted to discover that this was yet another mistake, some kind of hoax or error that he'd come back from again. If not, he's had a terrific ride, and left us with some great and memorable action to be entertained by.

Joe Bugner rates him the hardest puncher he fought, even more than Shavers & Frazier.
