Who deserved fighters of the Decade more..(90's)

Jones barely lost a round until he was 34 Addie bar the Griffin and Harding fights, how many Jones fights have you actually watched and what do you know of his opponents? Or did you just jump on the cool train where it's cool to downgrade everything he did without analysing his opponents and performances?

Michael Spinks had a much slower hands, much slower feet, sloppy jab, poor balance, didn't have much of a lead right and didn't have the best chin himself. He also was a left hooker with a far inferior left hook, so when they are in a position to throw hooks Jones would land first. Technical he's good and throws great combinations at mid range but he'd need to land that first punch to get to that range, Prime Jones is 1 of the hardest fighters to hit in the history of boxing. Based on that I see Spinks getting beat to the punch time and again

 

Chavez and DLH were both better than the BHOP and Toney that Roy fought for mine, pretty emphatically. I'd say Nelson was on a par with them too.

Roy's dominance throughout the period was pretty special though.

Roy would have smoked '88 Tyson. Faster hands, faster feet, better left hook, and Tyson's chin wasn't the best.

 

Seriously though, criticise Spinks' balance and his tendency to start slow all you like, but his jab and his chin?

Only a small minority had dm as the best in the division, especially after 98.

This is close. For me there are two of the greatest mythical fighters in history; it's very difficult imagining anyone sustaining a meaningful attack on them.

 

Whitaker

 

Duran deserves a mention

 

Whitaker was better than Jones for a longer time in the 90s.

 

if you are under the (reasonable) belief that jones didn't overtake whitaker until 96/97, then that's certainly true

 

After his struggles with rivera there's no way pea was the best man in the world, from about 95 it's really neck and neck between the two for win the best was. After 96 de la hoya was right up there; he had a fantastic year.

 

It could go either way tbh, obviously Jones had fewer losses due to Whitaker being older & having a few of his best yrs in the 80s but the version of Whitaker from 90-94 was the best fighter of the 90s IMO, Jones included, they did have different attributes as fighters to be fair but both were outstanding fighters.

I would go with Whitaker but have no problem with anyone picking RJJ.
