What fighters, past or present, never reached their full potential and for what reason? Pwill: Should have changed trainers a long time ago and learned how to fight like a big man. Too many wars, should have boxed more effectively Haye: great natural ability but also needed a better trainer to take him to the next level RJJ: relied to much on his natural abilities and should have focused more on the craft. Top 25 ATG could have been easily top ten KBros: Very, Very Good fighters in a **** era! I have them mid-high 20s ATG in the heavyweight division. Does not have the talent pool of fighters to reach their full potential. both of their styles are effective against the current crap of heavies Ike: What an utter waste of talent Tyson: mentally become undone after d'amoto died! Life spiraled out of control out of the ring leading to his speedy demise in the ring! Cintron: Lacked mental toughness (maybe it was beaten out of him by ******* Margocheato
Panchito Bojado....This guy was amazing...His first pro fight was a master piece. This shows you what a lack of heart can do to you.
I'd say RJJ reached his full potential, but should have simply retired earlier. His resume and public perception, neither of which are truly separable in my opinion, and I concede public perception may or may not be off-- and is not limited to the boxing community/elite/punditry, have been quite damaged in recent years. Had he not been disqualified for his first "loss" and retired after beating Ruiz (or perhaps fighting for another HW "title"?), his "legacy potential" would be maximized. His "skill and development", though, as well as the probable route of his career all things held equal, have been fully actualized. If you follow, as those last two sentences seem a little contradictory.
Victor Ortiz! at first they were hyping him up to be the next golden boy. he has all the skills but after that maidana fight everyone realized he has the mind of a child and no heart. the mayweather fight further proves this point.
Paul Williams reached as much as he could...Imo he did reach his potential. He just wasn't that good. He won a close win against Margarito, became champion, immediately lost the belt against Quintana, and then won it back. After that he beat a shot Winky Wright and didn't do mch, and this is when he had been pro for over a decade!! Haye, Cintron, lacked the same thing...HEART, as did Bojado. They could have, would have, but reality is, that putting IF's are just an excuse..What IF Michael Grant had a chin, what IF Zab Judah had heart, what IF Vargas wouldn't have been brought up too fast.. RJJ did all he could have. His style made him...Perhaps a more orthodox style would have been his downfall, so he did what he knew best, and that was use his natural athletic gifts. the Klitschko's do what they supposed to...WIN. And imo have reached their full potential.
If RJJ had fought a textbook style then he wouldn't of reached the same heights. He was a vurtuoso who is actually underappreciated now, like he was then. He had fundamental skills, not ATG skills but he had them, (see Ruiz fight) but the fact is that Roy's physical abilities were so far beyond anyone elses that he'd of been foolish not to use them.
**** it, I'm gonna catch some **** for this... But I'm coming from a pure "Boxing" only stance here. (Forget about all the outside the ring stuff here) Edwin "Dinamita" Valero
