How do you define a bum?

I dont think we can agree on these criterias, but I thank you for contributing with such a detailed suggestion.

 

Already at amatuer level, things will get pretty painfull, I have noticed.

Body punch connecting deep.

 

I've started training kids, the ones who turn away when people start throwing punches at them while sparring, are the ones I can help the least.

 

Unfortunately on ESB it tends to mean everyone below ATG status....and some in ATG status.

A "bum" is a bum that hangs outside the gym waiting for someone to pay him to spar to get KTFO so he can buy another 1/2 pint of booze and/or another fix. It is extremely disprespectful to call any ranked pro fighter a bum.

 

everybody that ever laced gloves is a bum.

 

I have been annoyed about ESB-members singing the bumsong for quite some time now, thus this thread. But what you describe above, is that why boxers started to use the word "bum" to trash talk each other in the first place? I had no idea.

 

Its really the worst thing you could call a fighter. You will never hear a fighter call another fighter a bum, unless there is bad blood, cause he kmows what it takes just to get in there. Bums dont exist in the ring, only outside of it.

 

^A bum is someone who makes statements like the one above.

 

A bum is a fighter who doesn't take his craft seriously.

Either he doesn't train much, or he comes into the ring overweight. - Or a fighter that looks good, but lays down as soon as he gets hit hard.

Any other fighter is a warrior, no matter what his record.

 

How do you define a tomato can? (clearly not the same as a bum.)

 

The word bum is truly tossed around with no real meaning these days.It should be reserved for fighters who take part in fights knowing they are going to lose."Fights that are lost when you signed the contract",as Teddy Atlas puts it.Sometimes even guys who have no business getting a boxing license.Usually they havent been training for a while,limited or unsuccesful AM career,they are working a full time job or whatever.Then suddenly they get a call from somebody asking them if they want to make a quick 500,1000 dollars I guess.These guys are bums.Not just any fighter who you see on TV and think is bad.But even "bums"got more balls than pepole whose only boxing expereince comes from a television.

 

Tomato cans are like bums but with a lot of heart.

They'll actually try to win but will fail because of lack of skills and will go down only after a severe beating
