He'd of won a lightweight title belt, and then gone up to LWW. He wouldn't be as well conditioned, nor as skilled as he is now and he'd fight in a far more aggressive style, he'd still win alot of fights, but he'd have another loss or two on his record, and probably by KO.

 

Depends who he trained with. I'm sure he could have found a fair few trainers who would have got him utilising his advantages and boxing smarter in the ring. That, coupled with his natural ability should have seen him bounce back to a decent level, probably a world title.

The most effective changes Roach bought about were just basic boxing in my eyes. More defensive awareness (if not actual skill), use the jab frequently, get in range and punch then get out, dont trade with punchers etc. These, plus a move up in weight and rebuilding his body seem to make a drastic difference in a short time.

Whether or not he'd have developed as far, and built as much confidence as he has sparring from with the other fighters in the wildcard is another thing though. I don't think things could have worked out much better for the lad really.

He deserves it though, he was willing and committed enough to make the jump abroad at such a young age. Fair play to him

I believe Khan probably has a higher Boxing IQ now that what he ordinarily would have had, and that, that if anything is more attributable to his success.I think Khan has become more savvy under Roach because he understands tactics/strategy a bit more, which is due to Roach's input imo. Dont get me wrong Khan can still be a naive fighter, but he's learned how to maximize his strengths, and he fights to them.

I think with the fanboys it's just that they see something that seems like a criticism of their hero and get angry and offended, which blocks the rational thinking part of their brain. Therefore no matter how blatantly sarcastic or absurd the thread may be, they just go into butthurt mode, which makes it even funnier. *It's great!

I remember after the Haye - Wlad face off, *I started one about having a source at HBO who told me Wlad fled studios via the toilet window, leaving behind a pair of soiled underwear. Got some funny reactions.*

 

Not sure about the first bit, Khan has shown he can follow a gameplan but that is more a demonstration of discipline than improved ring IQ. We've yet to see him be able to make the kind of game changing infight adjustments which a Mayweather, Pacquaio or Hopkins (also Calzaghe) are capable of.... Faced with adversity, the capacity to change-up and negate an opponent's tactics on the fly to swing the outcome of a bout in your favour. This is for me is what really sets out the elite fighters from the world level. Khan did demonstrate the ability to adjust against McCloskey, he was timing him better & better as the fight progressed but McCloskey offered nothing offensively and the fight result was never in question.

We've yet to see him come from behind to win and this is where the Peterson fight becomes so intriguing. I like Lamont and he's technically sound enough & physically the bigger guy which should make this an extremely difficult fight. If he won I wouldn't be shocked and he certainly has the ability to pick up a belt at 140 irrespective of what happens on Dec 10.

 

No that is a question mark I have to, whether when what he does is negated, can he adapt? What I was referring to was when he fights within the confines of what he's good at, he's become more effective cause he knows who he is as a fighter, where his strength lie and how to utilize them.

 

Just to make it clear. I still think he might be a naive kind of fighter against the wrong opponent, but with the right strategy laid out, using his advantages, he's become a much better fighter than he was. He understands who he is as a fighter.

 

The natural gifts that he holds, wouldn’t have allowed him to fall into obscurity or anything ridiculous like that. Like Shaunster’s just said, if he didn’t team up with Roach, he would have went with another trainer who would have instilled the boxing-basics that he was missing at the time.

So my guess is.....whilst not looking as spectacular as he’s currently doing, he still would have picked up a world title and be a name of relevance in the 140 division.
