6 day???? no way but more possible than with other fightesr who didnt have his reflexes!!! I saw him fight Thomas Hearns in New Orleans!! I was there live. We could not believe that Hearns was missing Benitez with his right hand by 6 inches and Hearns had Benitez trapped on the ropes and throwing body punches and missing Wilfreds body and all wilfred did was move his body effortlessly and Tommy was missing everything. But as great a boxer as wilfred was Hearns was just as good in those years and too rangy and quick!!!!.
Later Hearns knew he couldnt win with his right hand since he couldnt hit Benitez so he said it was hurt and used his jab to win a decision. Gregorio Benitez wasnt too happy with Hearns boxing and winning the fight!! But Wilfred would have beaten any other guy that night!!! too bad he was put up agaist the great Thomas Hearns or he would have stayed champ for a lot longer!!!!
Wilfred fought Cervantes,Palomino,Leonard,Duran and Hearns. Too bad he didnt fight Marvelous MArvin Hagler because I think he could have made Marvin look silly!!!

What a fantastic night that must have been:good That Benitez/Hearns fight is one of my all time favorites. It's the apogee of fistic skill from both of them:yep That for me was Hearns best ever performence juxtaposed with Wilfreds effortless sublime defensive nous.

Like you what i recall most from this fight is Wilfred on the ropes beckoning Tommy in & Hearns shaking his head & grinning "NO WAY" come on out to ring centre as Hearns could'nt land a split bag of rice on Benitez in some of those rounds when Benitez put his back too the ropes:lol: Both absolutly brilliant that night & i agree with you that Benitez would have given Marvin absolute fits:yep

Did'nt you also have that appertiser called Gomez/Pintor:smoke

stupid me almost forgot!! AFter those two fights me and my girlfriend at the time had no energy at all. Full boxing experience! Two totally different fights obviously.!!! you are right on about Hearns and the ropes... Hearns would stop and shake his head saying no and Benitez would stand on the ropes waiting!!! It was interesting to see a fighter standing there waiting like Benitez was and Hearns shaking his head like saying you are better than me on the ropes so I am not going to fight you that way if I dont have to!.
The fabulous four and five if you count WIlfred Benitez with Hearns,Duran,Leonard and Hagler was special! Hard to compare guys like Canelo Alvarez and Victor Ortiz to the guys like Benitez,Duran and Hearns. I give HBO credit for trying to build the guys like Alvarez and Ortiz up as elites.

Thanks for the explanation Ecto :good

As for Benitez's IQ, I imagine he knew nothing but boxing. Nothing.

    Its impossible. I'm sorry.

He went fifteen rounds at a fast pace. He took body shots. He was forced to move and juke and work his feet.

He may have been in camp for a less than optimal time, but you don't do 15 against SRL without conditioning. He wouldn't have made weight, he'd have been dead tired in 15 minutes, and would have been run ragged.

He was being soundly outboxed and outspeeded, but he was staying with Ray for a stretch. Having sparred world champions in training camps where I was working out 8 hours a day, I can tell you that no matter how relaxed you are, boxing at that high a level is utterly draining.

Again, undertrained to a degree, I believe, because that was his MO. Got off the couch six days before the fight is literally, literally impossible. No way. No fighter in history. Sorry.

Anything to discredit an SRL win, oh of course.

To think I signed up to this forum with a dislike of SRL. I may as well be fan No. 1 at this point.

Dude was 38-0 and lineal champ.... he got Beat. Just like Duran. Hearns. Kalule. Hagler. Lalonde.

Those heads are mounted on a wall. Game Over.

A guy walking around barking like a dog, an especially annoying dog, and basically carrying like an eight year old BUT having a secret dedication to training.
    That's allot to reconcile.

Benitez training habits have little to do with Leonard per se, and were already coming under scrutiny before the two even fought.

Keep the heroic defending of Ray's honour for another more worthy topic.Like him only fighting 30 seconds at the end of the rounds against Hagler etc
