Marciano... Best at Every Attribute of Human Excellence.

Why do we even bother mentioning another fighter? Or even boxing itself?

No mention for Joe Louis here? He might be # 1 most clutch

Marciano might be the ring's ultimate animal...Who do you pick over him sub 190lb in a head to head fight?

I love Marciano, but he seems to come up as the answer for everything. And sure, he qualifies as clutch... but again there many others, perhaps even non-heavyweights (gasp!), who should be mentioned.

How about Jake Lamotta? Fooling Laurent Dauthille into playing his possum game

Marciano never gets a mention in the "best jab" or "more slick" threads!

That said, I've seen him mentioned when discussing the best defence of all time, which is just outrageous. He had a good defence for a boxer with his style, that's it; the man was not a heavyweight Whitaker!

Suzie SURPRISE ! Jack Dempsey by virtually everyone who saw them both at their best's, picked the Manassa Mauler. Why ? Dempsey was twice as swift, was a better two-handed puncher, and had a killer instinct second to none. JD was considered the greatest rough and tumble heavyweight ever. And whereas Marciano, unlike a Joe Louis, missed his target half the time,
Dempsey hit his target most EVERYTIME... Styles make fights and Marciano would be the perfect foil for the Dempsey of Toledo...Remember the old, but true adage : SPEED KILLS...Cheers...

Larry Holmes deserves a shout even if he's not one THE highest level like Rocky, Sugar Ray, Sugar Ray, and Ali.

Just about half of his title defenses involve coming back from adversity or pulling out a tricky win: the fifteenth round against Norton, coming back from getting stunned and wobbled eight or nine times to stop Bonecrusher, pulling out the win over Witherspoon after getting badly shaken, outjabbing younger/faster Williams while cut, etc.

it's pretty much ali...then everyone else. loads of honourable mentions but whatever you think of him (or the decisions) the way he pulled it out in the late rounds against frazier (3), shavers, norton (3), lyle, bonavena (not losing but wanted that KO), spinks 2, etc. is the definition of this thread. well past him prime he knew how to do JUST enough to get the judges verdict or the KO

I think that's a distinction between great finisher and clutch for me. Yeah, the Conn fight was great but the other times he should've never been in the trouble he was.

Not really true. The Graham fight would be the only legit example of this from him, although I suppose one might throw in the Norris fight.

This is the real choice. Saad was king in the clutch.
