If the lineal champ retires, how is a new champion decreed?

1 versus 2 or multiple belt(like 3) unification usually.


For example, Zab became the lineal champion when he unified every belt under the sun at 147. Baldomir became lineal when he beat Zab Judah. Mayweather became the new lineal champion when he beat Baldomir. Ricky Hatton would have been lineal. But since Ricky Hatton didn't win and Mayweather retired that was it.

Complete belt unification would leave a recognised undisputed champ who should be seen as the best by everyone out there.

Some would argue that forest became lineal when he unified with mosley. Some would argue mayorga when he unified with forest.

Traditional lineage follows on from a time when there was one belt out there but in today's era it seems increasingly more difficult to determine an undisputed champion without total unification.
