http://www.krqe.com/dpp/sports/nm_sports/mathis-ko's-holm The run of victories have ended for world boxing champion Holly Holm. Anne Sophie Mathis of France put Holm on the canvas at the Route 66 Casino Hotel Friday night outside of Albuquerque, New Mexico in front of a stunned crowd that is not use to seeing Holm defeated. Holm started the fight well but, was rocked by a Mathis punch as early as the 3rd round. That did not stop the hometown favorite from battling strong as Holm started to move inside. That did not work to Holm's advantage. Holm would land solid punches throughout the fight but by the 6th round it was Mathis knocking Holm to the canvas. Holm got up and barely finished the round. She came out in the 7th round only to be knocked out by Mathis. KRQE's Lawrence Gilligan sat ringside and described the fight as very violent and something that he never experienced in a women's boxing match. With the victory Mathis improves to 26-1 with 22 knockouts. She also walks away with the IBA Welterweight title and WBAN Championship Belt. Mathis can also call herself the best women's welterweight pound for pound. Holm drops to 30-2-3 with the defeat.
Yeah I saw the result on boxrec but was annoyed I couldn't see it online. This is the first write-up I've seen.
Anne Sophie Mathis is unusual for a female boxer - she actually has power. What's more, she's also a decent boxer, and tall.
This fight was very likely to violent and exciting and it delivered. I'm anxious to watch the fight now. I guess there is a rematch included in the contract. Everyone was anxious to see Holm vs Braekhus but Holm knew Mathis was the most dangerous opponent of her career. Props to her for taking on Mathis anyway. Mathis at least will make some money out of it because in France she's unknown.
She fights like a tall fighter should, constantly jabbing and keeping her opponents at a good distance. Very effective european style with lots of jabbing and 1-2. I don't like her defense tough, I can't help but think that someone like Ann Wolfe would've gotten inside and land something huge.
Damn, I have yet to see a ladies fight where a knockout occurred. I know it's happened, but I've never seen one of them yet. Have to see this fight now.
