I know he didn't win any rounds but for a 38 year old it was impressive.

I imagine a prime Holmes could have held him off for longer and would have had the handspeed to start nicking rounds.

    Thoughts?

It would have been awesome. Just too old, too out of shape...Side Note: Holmes would have a hell of a lot more fans if he'd ever learned when to shut up.

a 38 year old holmes was better than most at any age

he was only "considered shot" due to this fight but thereafter proved this was BS

Similarily no other prime fighter KOs Holmes at any age

    except the specimen tyson

    this is mikes greatest win

like Ali KOing big george its a one moment in time thing

No, Cus had trained Tyson to be the perfect foil to Holmes style, believing that he would still be the dominant champion by the time Tyson was ready for his title shot. Tyson beats Holmes more often than not, and by KO imo.

I disagree. Prime Holmes would have jabbed and circled Tyson all night. Mike was a beast. But Holmes was special.

    ****ing clown.

Mike tyson ktfo out of holmes... no1 gives him credit for that. yet a full 4 years later he not only beat an up and coming Ray Mercer, but gave a peak Holyfield fits!

yes Holmes was past it. but he was in no way shot like most make him out to be.

prime4prime yes holmes vs tyson would go differently. but that tyson win over holmes was very good

It's abundantly clear a Holmes circa 1979-80 would have been a totally different proposition.A stylistic nightmare even for prime Iron Mike.
Holmes is right to feel unappreciated,he was very, very special.
No guarantee of a clear win though, just a much closer fight.

I dunno man, I just think Holmes couldn't have held off Tyson's savage aggression for the full 12-15 rounds, Tyson's style was perfect against a guy like Holmes imo.

Lol........Yeah, Holmes was frustrating Tyson each time Holmes hit the canvas! ha. No, in reality, Holmes did very little in this fight. He fought in a defensive mode; he never really tried to win or force the fight. If Holmes had opened up earlier, he would have gotten nailed quicker. He did well to avoid Tyson's big shots for the first three rounds, but he wasn't really frustrating Tyson. He was just trying to kill the clock and not get hurt. A prime Holmes would have pushed Tyson, but I'm not sure even a prime Holmes could have beaten Tyson. Tyson's aggressive style combined with his hand speed and punching power would have given Holmes all he could have handled. Tyson was way more dangerous than Earnie Shavers or Renaldo Snipes!

Prime Holmes beats prime Tyson on his jab alone. The wheelchair bound imitation of Holmes that stepped into the ring against Tyson, with years of inactivity and only a few weeks of preparation, was a pale, pale imitation of the guy who dominated HW in his prime.
