What would Cotto need to do to surpass Tito???

Realistically the situation is like this, tito trinidad is a hof boxer who is considered by many an atg, cotto is considered a hof boxer that wont reach atg status, but who knows?
To get there he needs to beat either pac/floyd at 147 or beat martinez at 160.
Another route that might put him in the same position as trinidad might be defend 154 belt a few times and win a legit belt at 160.
That is probably his best choice, fight and beat canelo, krikland, lara for example then beat a solid beltholder at 160 then he is up there imo.

 

If Cotto did that then hell yeah he would be higher than Tito.

 

good question. I think if he beat Martinez and then another pretty big win, maybe Alvarez, he would have a case.

 

Nah, even if he beat those guys, it wouldn't change the fact that Gomez, Ortiz, and Benitez were just better fighters. It's pointless arguing it really. Cotto's a good fighter, but he's not that good. He'll never be rated as high as Trinidad.

 

If he beat Pac and Mayweather, he would easily surpass Tito.

I don't think he is too far behind Tito now. Cotto's resume is starting to look pretty decent. Another big win and he might be tied with Tito. That picture is surprising. I didn't know Tito was that much bigger. Shows you how small Cotto really is. Tito looks taller than Margarito.

his best chance to have a prayer of passing Tito would be beating the p4p 1 or 2 or both but i just dont see it

or moving up and beating Sturm or Martinez

beating Canelo in a unification would be huge too or moving up and taking on Chavez but i dont see him beating Chavez

Tito had some great fighters like De La Hoya and Vargas and Whitaker and Camacho floating around at his time

not to mention he beat some good but not great fighters at probably their best stages of their careers

56-0 Campas, 32-0 Carr, Mayorga pretty good version, Reid and Joppy

1 loss in his prime and then came back and got embarrassed twice

Cotto has won 2 titles that were vacant and never successfully unified his belts

Trinidad did this twice

 

He'd be a top 20 ATG cleaning 1,2,3 P4P title holders in a span of 2 years.
