He is often given a bad rap on this board, mainly due to the Johnson Jeffries Mendoza McVey feud. I dont think he is anywhere near as bad as is made out. Obiously he wasnt in Jeffries league and probably Johnsons either. but not many, if any were.

Here is a report from his last fight where he seemed to have beat a respectable Ottawa boxer.

    http://fultonhistory.com/Newspaper ...=C:\inetpub\wwwroot\Fulton_New_form.html&.pdf

And here is his win over Sharkey (or ND). I know there are clearly reasons why this wasnt prime Sharkey, but liike when Williams beat Tyson, it is a win which rightfully thrust him into the title scene. Combined with the publicity from the Jeffries fight.

    http://fultonhistory.com/Process Sm...=C:\inetpub\wwwroot\Fulton_New_form.html&.pdf

This is the Limerick fight where it was clear that he wasnt in jeffries class but they are tough markers it was also clear that he was clearly better than limerick.

    http://fultonhistory.com/Process Sm...=C:\inetpub\wwwroot\Fulton_New_form.html&.pdf

And here is a really good summary article of Munroes Career.

Below is an opinion of Munroe's chances in the Jeffries fight ,and an assessment of his overall ability.

Eight months before he defended his title against him ,Jeffries stated that Munroe was not even a second rater.

    BOTTOM LINE

Munroe had no business anywhere near a world championship fight.

Jeffries should have been locked up for defending against him.

It's a good thing he lost money on the fight, he deserved to.

    Allen was a LIGHTWEIGHT.

Since I know you to be a fine poster I can only interpret this as an attempt at humour.:patsch

There was significant momentum building up behind Monroes claim for a shot at the title. He was a manufactured fighter, largley built up on the bones ofname fighters who were past their best.

He was also a product of superior management, and secured his title shot in large part by trash talking ala David Haye.

He was a concusive puncher, and Tom Sharkey said that he was the hardest puncher he ever faced.

The interview with Tom Sharkey in the link below, just prior to the Jeffries Munroe fight ,directly contradicts this statement.
Sharkey states, " Munroe hasn't got the wallop".

Munore was in shape at least for Jeffries. He was bounced out of there in two rounds in a fight that could have been stopped at the end of round one. While I do not think Munore was very good, he could be viewed as a bottom level top 10 contender in 1904. On par with a Mexican Pete Everett who Jeffries stopped in three rounds.

Eight months befroe he defended his ttile agains thim Jeffries said Munroe was not even a good second rater.
Descriptions of their sorry affair, refer to Munroe as a rank amateur.
