Russian light heavyweight boxer Roman Simakov, who collapsed in the ring on Monday night during a title defense, died overnight of brain injuries in a Yekaterinburg hospital, an official said Thursday.

Simakov collapsed a minute into the seventh round after enduring a torrent of clubbing rights and lefts from compatriot Sergei Kovalev, falling immediately into a coma from which he never emerged, said Igor Maruzov, the general secretary of the Russian Boxing Federation.

    Aw man.

I watched that unfold live, and was shocked to see the orange bodybag/stretcher thing brought out. At first I'd thought maybe they were just being overcautious as a matter of protocol for when someone gets KTFO in Russia or something...but yeah, the guy couldn't so much as twitch a muscle as several carriers were hauling him out of the ring. :verysad

****, really sad news to hear.

Hopefully he's received the best possible treatment and comes out of this with his health in tact.

The medical side of things have improved a lot since the days of McClellan's injuries.

Truly a strange sport to enjoy. -And a good reminder for those that are actually still defending Margarito.

Well, we are basically just savage apes, are we not?

**** - you can tell his balance and coordination appear to give out on him in the last 10 seconds. Not nice to see.

That's the **** part of the sport for sure. You guys remember when Oscar Diaz collapsed against Delvin Rodriguez in 08'? I wonder how he's doing nowadays, he was in really bad shape after that fight, but I never really heard much about it again. Its a shame for both fighters involved, it has to **** with you mentally to beat a man that bad. I never really thought Delvin was the same fighter after that fight, though he seems to be coming on again as of late. Good luck to this guy.

That's terrible. I don't really understand how an opponent can celebrate after something like that, Simakov didn't go down from any punches, he just crumples without getting hit with anything and then he loses consciousness... obviously something isn't right when that happens.

Crap. Hope he recovers. That's a reminder to people who complain about early stoppages.
