He is often given a bad rap on this board, mainly due to the Johnson Jeffries Mendoza McVey feud. I dont think he is anywhere near as bad as is made out. Obiously he wasnt in Jeffries league and probably Johnsons either. but not many, if any were. There was significant momentum building up behind Monroes claim for a shot at the title. He was a manufactured fighter, largley built up on the bones ofname fighters who were past their best. He was also a product of superior management, and secured his title shot in large part by trash talking ala David Haye. He was a concusive puncher, and Tom Sharkey said that he was the hardest puncher he ever faced.

Munore was in shape at least for Jeffries. He was bounced out of there in two rounds in a fight that could have been stopped at the end of round one. While I do not think Munore was very good, he could be viewed as a bottom level top 10 contender in 1904. On par with a Mexican Pete Everett who Jeffries stopped in three rounds.
Eight months befroe he defended his ttile agains thim Jeffries said Munroe was not even a good second rater. Descriptions of their sorry affair, refer to Munroe as a rank amateur.
