And this is the difference between Floyd and Marquez: the agression that JMM fights with and his willingness to take chances. That's exactly what Roach is saying. Now, I'm not saying Floyd won't make adjustments, but I could see Pacquiao having some success against his natural style.
At 38 years old and fighting out of his weight class, Marquez is'nt anywhere close to the quickness Mayweather employs to get off that first shot. What has got to be worrisome if you are going to be rooting for Pacquiao against Mayweather is, if Marquez was able to reach Pacquiao with good solid and hard leads....its going to be ridiculous the leads Mayweather will be able to land on Pacquiao. Once you have Pacquiao worried about getting hit with lead rights and counter rights after he throws a left hand, GAME OVER.......Pacquiao seizes to be the same aggressive fighter he always has been against stationary targets.
I think it all depends on what style Mayweather shows up with. If he comes out giving Manny movement in the first round then it is surely going to be easy work for him bc he will box off the back foot and use his speed, and timing to measure Pac from a distant. If he decides to walk Manny down and fight on the inside it will give Manny more opportunities but I still see Floyd winning a UD that way. Manny has a punchers chance though.
:deal Bingo. Manny can't handle movement at all and needs a punching bag standing in front of him. These Pac fans have been spoiled seeing him against Flat footed no defense guys. That is why I picked that 38 year old Marquez to beat him. Also Manny doesn't have a JAB to offset Floyd. Manny can feint but what does he do if Floyd throws a quick crisp jab at him while stepping out of range? Manny would have to reset and as soon as he does expect him to get hit with a quick right hand.
One counter-puncher against another with a vast size differential, perhaps. But against fast-paced aggressors? No. I've never seen Floyd consistently turn and function within a fighter's rhythm the way Marquez does. He's most comfortable with his opponent directly in front of him edging forward while Mayweather does what he does best, judging the distance and getting amazing counters off. The spots where he has looked vulnerable in, while not numerous, reflect a style habituated to straight-line fighting as opposed to the mobile defensive/offensive blend that a Hopkins or a Whitaker would employ.
I actually just watched the Judah fight trying to collect clips for a video that proves my point. He took away Judah's best punches by being aggressive and left-hooking over Judah's jab (which started his whole offense) and punishing him to the body. Still, as he wore Judah down, he's almost never changing the angle while setting up an offensive angle, and he's constantly getting hit by straight lefts. He takes them well and he still dominates the second half impressively, but he doesn't do it with lateral movement. In fact, oftentimes he was stepping to Judah and Ortiz's left-hand side for long stretches.
Gatti, Mitchell, and Bruseles [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-04I1Wmbpwo[/ame] Don't underestimate his ability to move and use angles. I get your point though.
Yea I do see your point. I know it's not that he can't use certain angles or that he's flat-footed or anything like that; just that he doesn't integrate his defensive movement into his offense the same way Marquez does at all, and sets them up largely from subtle upper-body positioning, rather than a rhythm of low-crouched weaves mixed in with lateral steps and hypnotic feints. That's all I'm saying.
I agree in that although they are both counterpunchers, JMM is different in that he takes more risks. But Mayweather not being as big a risk taker enables him to be far more efficient and accurate with is punches, THIS is what makes Roach nervous and has ALWAYS made him nervous when looking at this fight. Mayweather has a connect percentage of over 40% in his last three fights...this is not a guy I would be eager to fight.
Don't be foolish. Floyd has had the best lead right hand since he became a pro kid. I know you only started watching him after people started wanting him and Manny to fight so I will excuse your ignorance.
Are you serious or joking? Judah and Manny fight nothing alike. Judah is a slick guy who probably knows Floyd better than any fighter based off the fact that they grew up together and sparred for years as youngsters in the gym. Zab only won 3 rounds out of a 12 round bout and you think Manny should use that game plan? Manny doesn't have the jab or timing that Judah has either.
