1. The division hadn't 'hotted up', none of those opponents - Marg/Cotto/Williams were a harder fight than DLH at 154. Mosley, Margarito and Cotto all turned down fights with him prior to his retirement 2. He retired after Baldomir, after DLH and after Hatton. He just took a longer break after Hatton, he suffered many serious hand injuries (breakages) and had fallen out of love with the sport.
When it's all said and done boxing historians will remember Floyd did not fight a prime Cotto, Margarito, Williams, fought De La Hoya and Mosley toward the end of their careers and if he doesn't fight Pac, Martinez or Khan it will also diminish his legacy. Nobody except the hardcore cult like Floyd fans will make the "Arum" excuse for him.
it's just a coincidence. floyd needs to heal and repair his body since he was boxing since he is a kid. he would never let boxing retire him like what roy jones or holyfield does in their career when they continued to fight even if they are way past it. also who the hell is cotto back then in 2008? ellerbe said he is not a draw so i believe him.
Malignaggi won about 4-5 rounds against Cotto, quite a few fans had Mosley beating him and he ran at the end, Torres knocked him down countless times nearly giving Cotto his first loss, Corley had him out on his feet and lost on a premature stoppage, Judah seriously had Cotto hurt Hardly the same as Ortiz winning no rounds, Hatton barely landed any punches and Judah winning about 3 rounds before fouling out
lots of excuses but the names cotto, margarito, and williams are not in his resume. no ones saying he downright loses to them. it's just odd that floyd retired at the very moment these fighters were at their respective peaks and momentum.
i beg to disagree. arum has forced floyd to retire. floyd has no big GBP opponent at Welter that time so he has no choice but to go to WWE. well mosley is but cotto just beat him. cotto is a non-draw so floyd should be excused. pacquiao is an arum fighter who is taking steroids so floyd should get a pass. floyd would beat them anyway so there's no need to fight them welters.
It doesn't matter what other guys did against Cotto. All that matters is that Floyd didn't fight him. Fights aren't won on theory.. Floyd fans don't seem to understand this.
Malignaggi winning rounds v Cotto is similar to Judah winning rounds v Floyd. Cotto - Mosley is similar to Floyd - DLH. Clear win IMO Cotto had trouble with Corley & Torres. Floyd had trouble with Castillo 1 Judah hurt Cotto about as bad as Mosley hurt Floyd.
true. i think fighting ortiz who is a young hungry lion should be enough to compensate for the lack of these ww's in floyd's resume. he fought a lion who was no leftover of anybody by the time they fought.
Arum said while Mayweather would have taken the $8 million to fight Margarito, he asked for a $10 million guarantee to fight opponents such as Miguel Cotto and Ricky Hatton, when Arum was only willing to guarantee $7 million. Arum said Mayweather also asked for $20 million to fight De La Hoya, a fight Arum said he wasn't interested in participating in. "That's not in the cards," Arum said. "He wants $20 million for the De La Hoya fight? It's not there. Sometimes, my man, you gotta know when to hold 'em and when to fold 'em. We'll talk about things down the road." Arum should have made the fights Floyd wanted and paid the man what he asked for. Floyd found out what he was worth and Arum wasn't ready for that.
Similar aesthetics don't mean similar caliber fighters though. Bruseles had vastly inferior boxing skills to Miguel Cotto. Bruseles would likely get stopped by the version of Shane Cotto fought, and clearly that's not what happened to Miguel. Just saying. For me it's not a real indicator of much.
^^ nonetheless, how does floyd going on retirement and/or vacations make him the same amount of money as what he supposedly turned down from arum?
if floyd is bored with boxing, and he probably retired because he was, then it's not about how much he could have made. nonetheless, there is no excuse for floyd -pac not being made. it was clearly the last fight both fighters needed before hanging them up
i don't know why these fools want people to fight cotto, margarito, pacquiao and martinez? floyd would easily box their ears off and would even stop cotto and pacquiao within 8 to 10 rounds. martinez would be a tough fight but only if he weighs at 160. floyd would make him look like dela hoya. i wish floyd was in the era of the fab four so he would not get bored with these sub-par opponents. floyd could have a trilogy already with duran and leonard.
Except Malignaggi isn't on Judah's level and needed gifts against Ndou and Ngoudjo. DLH barely landed on Mayweather, not close. Cotto looked shakey against everyone pretty much, Mayweather rarely did and had loads of dominant performances. Mayweather rarely got hit, Cotto nearly always got hit and hurt When did Cotto ever want the fight? Mayweather wanted him in Nov2005 and Arum wasn't having it. Arum isn't putting a cash cow in with Floyd, it's obvious. If Cotto wanted the fight today he'd leave Arum and not resign. Yet he's resigning to face Chavez Jr. The only way Mayweather could make fights with Margarito or Cotto would be to resign with Arum and earn about 30% of what he's earning
