BUTE is a solid fighter. But Until he FIGHTS a Ward, Froch, Kessler he is always gonna be a big QUESTION MARK!

Yes! BUTE should get a crack at Ward/Froch!

My lists of the top 5 guys at 168 lbs :

    RESUME WISE :
1- Carl Froch (His overall body of consistent work since December 2008, give him a thin edge over Ward).
2- Andre Ward (His win against Kessler puts him there, mainly based on the fact that Kessler was considered the best at the time by 95% + people).
3- Mikkel Kessler ( His body of work throughout the years and especially that Froch win sealed the 3rd spot for him).
4- Lucian Bute (He's been convincingly beating every possible challenge. He'd be ahead of Ward if he could have pulled off a Kessler fight and beat him.)
5- Andre Dirrell (He should have been given the ''W'' against Froch, but he wasn't, therefore he's last for now).

    ATHLETICISM (Speed, agility, reflexes) :
    1- Andre Dirrell
    2- Andre Ward
    3- Lucian Bute
    4- Mikkel Kessler
    5- Carl Froch

    OVERALL BOXING SKILLS :
    1- Lucian Bute
    2- Andre Ward
    3- Andre Dirrell
    4- Mikkel Kessler
    5- Carl Froch

Many have difficulty rating fighters because they often mix these 3 components when making an assessment of these guys.

To answer the OP's question :
I think the finalists know they need to face and beat Bute to be proclaimed the best at 168lbs. They know that Bute was the 2nd best behind Kessler once the S6 started. They also know he wasn't in the S6 because some people didn't want him there.....

Bute vs the S6 winner is a fight that boxing fans should firmly ask for and that boxing politics should definitely make happen, for the sake and the legitimacy of the SMW division.

Can you rephrase that, PTF? I think this comment got overlooked.

It's not the case Bute wasn't in the S6 because he wasn't good enough.......

...triple negative? Or are you seriously saying he wasn't invited because he wasn't rated high enough at the time?

    A) ****ed up triple negative, well, good one, you lost me (pardon my French). :D

    B) not good enough to get in the S6 in the first place - you don't know your SMW history.

Again, if it's 'A', sorry for bringing it up.

Anyone who believes 'B' is true simply cannot be taken seriously. Bute was Ring #2 where as Ward, Dirrell and Froch were low Ring top10.

When the S6 was in the works at Showtime, Bute was an HBO fighter rematching the guy who put him down in '08... and cleared that up in decisive fashion.

Bika was a highly regarded gatekeeper, Bute dominated from R3 til the end. Berrio was considered one of the best punchers at SMW in '07, Bute took him out. In 2007-08, Bute was rated higher than Ward, Dirrell, Froch, Inkin, well... higher than everyone except Kessler, plain & simple.

    Right?

THis comparison of Resume are getting us no where.. Kessler win for Ward Trumps Butes Resume.. Period.. it may not be by much.. but being the king of the division give Ward the nod over someone who has no such name on their resume.. Bute's best name is an older Glen johnson..

Also No excuses for Kessler.. He played ***** and got ****ed.. he was not preped for going into an opponents backyard to win a fight, didn't spar any southpaws.. the list goes on.. He could not get over on his Resume alone.. he got his ass handed to him plus a few contrasting in style headbuts.. Done deal..

Don't get me wrong I would love to see Ward vs Bute.. directly after the Super 6.. if that happens and Ward Wins, the Kessler rematch goes out the window.. and his chances to Unify is null and void..

Ward is going to make Bute fight the loser of Super 6, Kessler or someone like DIrrell before they get it on...

You're not undisputed UNTIL you beat Bute. Listening Ward or Froch?

You are one of the best posters on the board, but I don't think your rankings (resume wise) stack up - they are self-contradictory given your view of the Dirrell vs. Froch result.

I would take this as your rankings list:

    OVERALL BOXING SKILLS :
    1- Lucian Bute
    2- Andre Ward
    3- Andre Dirrell
    4- Mikkel Kessler
    5- Carl Froch

I think it's spot on if you take Dirrell out - what has Dirrell done (results wise or performance wise) to be ranked so highly?

I see and understand the comparison.......somewhat. However, only when Calzaghe stepped into the ring with the top guys, and won, could he then be considered the best in the division. Same goes for Bute.

I do think Bute is the real deal and will be a tough, tough guy to beat at 168, but saying he looked better against 2nd tier guys doesn't mean he will have the goods to beat the best guys. It doesn't work like that.

thers no big difference between Bute and Froch in terms of their pure boxing skills. the difference will either be Butes strength and power or Frochs heart and mentally if they happen to fight. so I don't think they should be that far apart in those fantasy rankings..

    absolutely 100% no.

if bute wants to 'arrive' at SMW let him earn his shot and fight some of the guys who put themselves in there to begin with.

Sorry Drozzy,I thought it was clear that I was saying it's not the case that he was left out of the S6 because he's not good enough.I'm well aware that he's good enough and it was a contractual problem. It reads OK to me but if there's any confusion I hope this clears it up.

ill try and keep this as unbias as possible. before S6 started bute was ranked arguably 1 or 2 lets even put 3rd in the division. i hope we can agree on this. for what ever reason he was not invited, dont argue the why its hopeless. the question is, should we punish the guy for not being part of the S6 when thoese who did participate had the obligation to face each othe. lets admit it would not have bin that easy to orginize those fights without the S6. thsi turny helped favorably the participents to rise in the standings. i wish i could explaine myself better as to why i greatly believe Bute should face the winner, heck ill even take the loser of the S6, but please stop with the he is unworthy it does not hold ground. you want to be the best, then make sure you have all the belts in your living room as showcase. Bute has bin waiting long enough. thats my two cents.

Semi-final 1 - Bute vs the loser of the Froch - Ward fight
    Semi-final 2 - Kessler/Stieglitz vs the winner of S6

    Final - 1 vs 2

For Dirrell, in terms of technical boxing skills, I confirm my assessment of the list provided. Overall boxing skills in these examples (in correlation with technical skills), don't have anything to do with resumes or accomplishments. It's based only on overall, perceivable boxing skills.

I actually put Dirrell last in the resume (accomplishment) column for the very reason that he hasn't done enough to be above the four others.

Dirrell is mentioned in all 3 categories simply because he belongs there if we only account for the top 5 of the SMW division.
