    He lacked a right hand for a period of time but he was sharp with it against Margarito. The lack of a clinch and easily put on the back foot was also a problem, how much of the improvement was down to Tony being past prime or his new trainer we will have to find out

    Main strengths:

    * Accurate left jab
    * Thudding Left hook which be thrown effectively to body and head
    * Displays Underrated defensive movement and surprisingly good ability to pick off punches....when so inclined
    * Smooth combinations

    Main weaknesses

    * Tends to slug when it isn't necessary.
    * Has a tendency to rely on one mode of defense at a time, rather than blend them together.
    * Under-utilizes right hand
    * Fades somewhat during closely contested fights.

    I wouldn't classify power and durability as either outstanding strengths or glaring weaknesses in Cotto's case. He's been ground down a couple of times, but has held up pretty well against opposition for the most part. And he's been able do do enough damage to either stop his remaining oppponents, or to at least make them think before launching any attacks.

    That's basically the book on Miguel, imo.

    Considering he's lost twice, once avenged, and there's only one debatable fight on his ledger (the SD with Clottey, a top ten guy and no scrub, that I felt Cotto won by a point because of the KD), I think his "flaws" are pretty much outdone by his strengths. That's what you expect from top-level fighters.

    With a good trainer to keep him settled, he's smart and adaptable in the ring.

    his stance used to be really bad

    I think he's like emmanuel and Amir in the sense that no matter what you do for them they'll always be sucker for uppercuts. margoe landed 3-4 uppercuts in a row on Miguel in the rematch.

    see how his body is too squared up and head is right in the center

    it makes him a very easy target

    that's not the textbook classical stance that naturally positions the fighter at an angle giving built in defense

    Very solid analysis.

    Alot of so called 'weaknesses' in fighters are the attributes that don't live up to the absolute elite. I would say Cotto is one of the most well rounded fighters out there, all in all.

    He's changed that since working with Steward.

    His flaws are what make him a dramatic and exciting fighter to watch.
    Every fighter has flaws, and many fighters know their own weaknesses and choose to hide behind them.

    Cotto really gained a lot of respect in his rematch redemption with Margo.
    Deep down inside, he knew he could pull it off but it was not going to be easy. Point out all the flaws you want, but how many fighters (especially in this day) are willing to match themselves with the toughest fights?

    He's solid enough at everything, not stand-out at anything. He'll look good against B levels, but the lack of any outstanding attributes will see him overwhelmed against the elites. In any era. He's a good fighter, but nowhere near being great.

    no he didn't

    and the 2 fights he was with steward, manny had him fighting with a different stance, not as squared up.

    I don't think you can just give a blanket statement like that and say his defense is 'bad'. His stamina definitely affected things before, he'd stop moving his head halfway through a fight and just stand there getting tagged. Saying he has low ring IQ isn't worthy of comment.. And power? He had great power up to 147, and still has good power. Not one punch knockout power, but enough to make you feel it. The number of knockouts he has on his record from the 8th round and up backs that up. Enough power to do serious cumulative damage.

    Discipline and dietint, if he was more dedicated he would've made a bigger mark at 140. All those nights out partying drinking alcohol and eating junk food eventually take a toll on you. Instead of building from all the work through the years. He losses it all after each fight and then have to start all over again in training camp for three months to try and get it back.

    Cotto's weaknesses are his size where he fights and something which is hard to put my finger on. He has a lot of heart to fight anyone, yet if he is hit he tends to start to brawl. So he is not the toughest guy in the ring once he starts to get nailed. But he is turning into a HOF fighter in my mind.
