Oscar was indeed a great fighter. Most ppl say Oscar lost to quartey and whitaker? Well most ppl thought oscar beat trinidad and mosley rematch so either way oscar resumes was a great one. And lets be clear at something the reason oscar vs trinidad rematch never happen cause trinidad wanted the larger pie of the purse in which is ridicules considering oscar is a far bigger draw then trinidad. Trinidad vs Vargas was around 400k while Oscar vs Vargas was around 900k, Trinidad vs Mayorga was around 400k while Oscar vs Mayorga was around 850k. Trinidad vs Hopkins was around 400k but Oscar vs Hopins did a million buys. <<<the proof is right here of who deserve a bigger purse in the rematch.
Made chicanito step up....genaro had a broken nose by mosley in sparring, ruelas was shot, leija came up in weight, and gatti was a joke period. Oba carr was old, so was camacho, rivera was a good c+ fighter. Paez was blown up. Mosley beat him twice , whitaker beat easy with a jab, quartey was a gift, ill give you the trinidad fight although he lost it because he got wore down and ran from 9 thru 12. Sturm killed him.
Whitaker didnt won easy with a jab cut that **** out. <<<If thats the case then Oscar easily beat Trinidad with a jab in which Trinidad nose was already bledding from the early rounds. Oscar clearly beat Mosley in the rematch in which even Mosley look stunned that he got the decision win.
De La Hoya was a great fighter who had a good career. The great debate will always go on...did Oscar lose every big fight he was in, or did all of his losses happpen to be big fights? He got his ass kicked by Strum, and copped out vs Hopkins, btw.
Very accomplished, very gifted, very skilled, very brave, very competitive, and what a left hook. He's an All Time Great.
I have him winning those fights, but at the same time have him losing the decisions to Sturm, Whitaker, and Quartey. So it doesn't change my stance on him at all. Oscar was an elite level fighter, but nothing more. He was not a stand-out amongst the best, he was just one of them. That said, he fought them all, and that has to count for something.
I would be curious what posters aged 20-25 think of him. So much animosity comes from fans of his opponents and people in their thirties. I wonder what people without the bias that stems from your guy beat my guy think of him. In reality its the younger generations which will make of Oscar an ATG legend or not.
