Was the American referee fair to Amir Khan?

It appeared to me than the referee tonight was favoring the hometown fighter Peterson.

He didn't count the first knockdown, and deduting two points from Khan was excessive. He never said anything to Peterson when he came in with his head, and hit while holding.

What do you think?

 

The first knockdown? Watch the again - The ref had his leg behind Peterson's right leg and Khan had his leg behind Peterson's left leg. That's why he went down. No KD

As for the points, it's hard to say. He was clearly warned on several occasions, including a final warning. The fact is that is Khan had even a shred of an inside game he wouldn't need to push his opponent off every time they get close to him

There was only one KD in the first round.

The other were a slip/trip and a push from Khan that knocked him over.

Why must there always be excuse making? Khan fouled for the entire fight, deserved to be penalised.

 

it's how I feel also. I was initially pissed at the ref taking a point away the second time, but you almost have no choice once he clearly sucker punches Peterson.
I really wish Peterson didn't win this way and I wish the points weren't taken away, but Khan was warned over and over and even had a first point taken away. :conf

 

I dont blame the ref, Khan just shouldve fought better

 

even the second KD is debatable - no clean shots really landed, then Khan pushes Peter while he has his leg behind Lamont's = Lamont goes down.

Neither were true KDs for me.

 

If Joe Cortez was there he would've saved khan and not let lamont bang on the inside.

 

did people not see Khan constantly pushing Peterson's head down and grabbing his arms??? he was warned about 500 times before he was deducted for the 2nd time.

 

and on your claim of hitting and holding, he was hitting while KHAN was holding. perfectly legal.

 

I think Peterson fought a brilliant fight but the ref seemed intent from early on in the fight on penalising Khan for anything. A couple of times early on he interrupted the action to speak to Khan and I said 'gtfo of the way, it's 6 of one half a dozen of the other'

Peterson tried to turn it into a brawl on the inside (sometimes leading with his head) and as we often see fighters wanting to box do, Khan pushed his opponent off to create some distance. I didn't think it was excessive by either fighter but to me if he was going to warn one then he had to warn the other.

Poor performance by the referee in my opinion.

I thought the ref was fine. Khan ended up being embarrased when Lamont went to work on the inside.

 

the ref did a good job, Con and the HBO crew were just looking for excuses

 

Anyone who applauds a ref for deciding a fight in round 12 is no real boxing fan. It would have been a draw if he had stayed out of it.
