I think now Roach's coaching is beginning to look very exposed. To be honest I have always thought he was overated but I think it is beginning to show quite clearly. No matter what, Manny did NOT look good against Mosely when he got shown some movement despite being the far superior fighter at this stage in both their careers. He looked even worse against a 38 year old Marquez who he had already fought 24 rounds with (he should have known Marques inside out), and wasnt in his natural weigh element. Now Khan looked OK in a thrilling fight with Maidana (I actually thought he would have boxed circles around Maidana which he didnt) but now when he fights Peterson it is clear he has no inside game, he appears not to be able to fight going backwards, has very little defense whatsoever and he doesnt have sufficient power either @ 147.5Lbs (I believe thats what he rehydrated to) I think Roach is working with his fighters strengths ONLY which is good enough to beat the majority of fighters when you have athletes as gifted as Khan and Manny but they are definately missing elements from their game. Where is the defense? Where is the ability to adjust? What about inside fighting? Fighting backwards? Hmmmm? Manny is coming to the end of his career and he has very very good power so not so much of a worry for him BUT Khan is talking about moving up to 147 and doesn't posses power anywhere near Manny therefore he is going to need his boxing fundamentals even more. I'm worried for him I think he and Freddy (if that what he choses) need to go back to the drawing board. Forget fighting Peterson for now and learn some of the skills he lacks, to be honest I think a few trips to any of the Mayweathers (Jeff, Roger or Sr would help him in the departments he is currently lacking) What do you think?
I didnt say he was ****, I dont think he is the best trainer in the game however. But you are not addressing my points Amir and Manny are lacking in a few areas and I think that might be down to their coach. This is a forum to discuss such things if you dont agree then please explain to me Im all ears.
I agree. Freddie Roach has been great for Khan, not because he neccicarily IMPROVED Khan, but he taught him to use his strengths to a greater advantage, formed his jab etc. and movement alot more efficient than it was 2005-2008 years. However, as you said, there has not been anything really ADDED to his arsenal, they havent taught him how to fight on the inside well, reserve energy and not run around the ring constantly, etc. These weaknesses need to be addressed if Khan is to be a better fighter, everyones been too concerned of how bad his chin supposedly was, which has been long proven that its at the least average/decent.
Roach is the best trainer of our generation, one of the GOATs, but the dude has ****ing Parkinsons. It sucks, but it is what it is.
So you agree with me...... Ok so he is past his prime, I could maybe agree with that, Due to what though? His age, his illness?
I agree with you I dont think there has been adding to Khans arsenal at all, rather just an improvement of what he already had. My problem is that Khan doesnt have big power and moving up will not help him so he desperately NEEDS the fundamentals even more, what happens when he faces more fighters that have one punch that can change a fight? So what does he do now?
Roach has gotten credit for fights where matchmaking outweighed the coaching, not to say he isn't a great coach but he is not Merlin.
