"Fools rush in where Angels fear to tread ", applies to this thread. For example, what does the term greatest P4P fighter truly mean ? Does it mean to dominate your weight class more effectively than any other fighter in your weight division ? Or does it mean that your ability to do the much more difficult task of fighting "the bigger boys",very often and whipping them...As Shakespeare wrote, "that is the question "?... On the basis of their great ability to go beyond their weight class, in effect to "carry more weight " as a champion thoroughbred must do, and overcome your weight handicap, is to me at least, the true meaning of best P4P boxers in history... On this basis my top 10 fighters are- 1- Harry Greb [ 300 bouts, seldom losing, never kod, except for prelim 1st year, and for the last few years, with sight of one eye]. 2- Bob Fitzimmons -[ a middleweight in a heavyweight's torso], kod Dempsey, than flattened top heavyweights in a long career.] 3- Sam langford, short and heavier than Greb, flattened heavyweights, and at last part of career virtually sightless] 4- Henry Armstrong- [a dynamo] was unbeatable for many years, but did not have the ability of a Greb to avoid punches. Every fight a war... 5- Mickey Walker [p the Toy Bulldog was a middleweight who went to war against top heavyweights, fearing no one and prospered.. 6- Ezzard Charles [ a great MW,morphing into a great Light HW]. Now for the top 5 fighters who fought mostly in their division and excelled. 1- Ray Robinson- [greatest all around fighter ever ] 2-Benny Leonard [had everything. LW dominance for 7 years] 3- Joe Louis [ greatest combination puncher in history ] 4- Jack Dempsey [before Hollywood, a 187 pound terror ,a killer attitude] 5- Roberto Duran, [ a smaller and lighter version of Jack Dempsey ] Hon. mention- Gans/ Walcott /Dillon/ Pep/Burley,Marciano/Frazier/ Moore/ Ali of course...
Dempsey excelled more in his own division...than Muhammad Ali? Than Marvin Hagler? Than Carlos Monzon? Than Joe Gans? I don't think he even excelled more in his own division than Jack McAuliffe. In a way this sort of thing is good for me, because it's not that hard to argue Liston above Dempsey, and he's my favourite. Funsies.
Yeah i've concluded a top 50 just isn't good enough considering the amount of greats the sport has had. Even guys like packey, gibbons and darcy and other forgotten greats.
Mc, you are correct in the fact that Ali excelled in the era of the best heavyweight contenders. Hands down ...I meant to put Dempsey in the first category where at 187 pounds he flattened fighters 25-50 pounds heavier than he was. I meant to put him and Jack Dillon in the first category, in their ability to destroy much bigger men than they were...Sorry.
01. Sugar Ray Robinson 02. Sam Langford 03. Ray Leonard 04. Muhammad Ali 05. Harry Greb 06. Henry Armstrong 07. Pernell Whitaker 08. Roberto Duran 09. Ezzard Charles 10. Marvin Hagler 11. Ike Williams 12. Joe Louis 13. Tony Canzoneri 14. Joe Frazier 15. Salvador Sanchez
I ranked Barbados Joe Walcott too low I suppose. As a 5ft1" WW, Walcott beat LHs as Joe Choynski, George Gardner, HW Dan Creedon, drew with Sam Langford, Phil. Jack O'Brien... Hell, this Walcott belongs in the top 5 P4P fighters in history. Nat Fleischer who saw all Welterweights from Walcott to Kid Gavilan, had Walcott # 1... He might be right !. Cheers...
Fighters that I have seen decent footage of (rough order)..... Sugar Ray Robinson Henry Armstrong Muhammad Ali Willie Pep Ezzard Charles Roberto Duran Sugar Ray Leonard Joe Louis Pernell Whitaker Julio Cesar Chavez Thomas Hearns Alexis Arguello Marvelous Marvin Hagler Salvador Sanchez Floyd Mayweather
Anyone here purchased or read the Langford book by Clay Moyle? Seen nothing but five star reviews for what is acclaimed to be the most definitive, factual work published on Langford.
yup, and sadly I'm only starting to explore his career and resume. A couple weeks ago I didnt even have him among my top five welterweights which is something of a travesty. Can only wonder what he still couldve accomplished if not for the shooting incident.
