Joe Cortez: Involved in Maidana-Khan (Dec. 11, 2010), some said he "saved" Khan from a stoppage in the 10th round. In the end a good amount of people felt he didn't let Maidana fight his fight. Joe Cooper: Involved in Khan-Peterson (Dec. 10, 2011). Deducted 2 points on Khan for pushing, and scored a "knockdown" on Peterson, while ruling the previous knockdown a slip. You can add other fights to the discussion. Hope you enjoy.
Joe Cortez in the Ortiz - mayweather fight was as bad. He actually did not see the first punch that mayweather threw before the ko.
Khan was warned at least 5 times. I don't get why he is the bad ref. The first knockdown did not even have a punch land. It was a tangling of the feet. Even showed in replay.
Cortez is BAD. in many fights. but i always think of him warning Hatton while Floyd was holding and throwing elbows all night. Last nights ref sucked as well. Peterson was pushed down... not knocked down. those points against Khan was a joke and possibly a make-up call. or hometown cooking. Andrade/Bute ref sucked. cost Andrade the win.
Cortez and its not even compareble. Honestly he would be 1 of the worst refs even if he was consistent on how he conducts fights but the fact he can do a 180 on what he allows on a fight per fight basis just makes him god aweful. Its the 1 ref i am about 99.9% sure that is paid off, i suppose seeing as hes getting old and senile he wants to cash out.
Cortez is ****, the Ortiz/Mayweather fight was a farce and he seems to change his style according to which fighter he wants to favor (see - Hatton/Mayweather vs Calzaghe/Hopkins performances). Cooper was out of his depth in the Peterson/Khan fight and was clearly favoring Peterson in both his style and what he was saying during the fight. However it is the only time I have seen him and he was bad for both fighters (points deduction in the 12 and 1st round "kd") so I say Cortez.
Not that it's part of the thread topic, but the guy that reffed Mares-Agbeko 1 and Donaire-Montiel stuffed up pretty bad, in both those fights. He was man enough to man up to the Donaire-Montiel fight recently, but he backed himself for the Mares-Agbeko 1 debacle (with that said, I was one of the few that thought Mares would beat Agbeko with or without the help of a ref, but still).
I said a while ago i think all current elite level fights should be refereed by either Bayless/Weeks or Smoger. Other referees then get the chance to prove themselves in regular fights, if they do well they moveup to championship level and eventually to the elite tier. Considering Cortez performance he should only be allowed to do debuting fighters 4 rounders, but even then he would probably find a way to **** it up. Also Cooper may have been a little out of his depth but he warned Khan REPEATEDLY over and over and that thick idiot kept ignoring it. Its not like he got points docked out of the blue. Cooper seemed a little nervous but he did fine tbh, he allowed infighting, did not try to get into the picture needlessly and gave fair and ample warning before docking points. Can't blame Cooper for Khan being probably the dumbest top tier boxer.
