Sky boxing commentary getting better

What a load of rubbish. Khan did throw the fight away for starters and Nelson did credit Peterson and I'm pretty sure agreed with the consensus that he was glad Lamont won anyway.

The DeGale bit was funny though. "Would you rather sit here Johnny?"

 

I thought the judging for Khan was pretty abysmal. It seemed to favour light, slapping blows to the guard instead of Peterson's more sparing but harder, more effective shots. But I concede this is something I'm finding annoying general - too many judges score for activity over quality.

 

I think it is fair to say that Khan threw the fight away, to a point of course, but Nelson's reasoning was way off.

Talking with your pen and tapping your spare hand on the table doesn't make your points any more valid, Johnny.

I do agree that you can't have him and McGuigan together, Barry likes to have the last word, which is annoying, but he clearly has more knowledge or is prepared to say what he thinks so I'll tolerate that over ''Soundbytes'' Nelson.

 

Nelson is the problem - he's awful. I don't know why they have him on-board because I can't think of a single time he's said anything insightful. He just trots out the old cliches about "wanting it more", etc. He even did it on Saturday/Sunday.

 

Kinda ironic when you consider that Nelson tanked on a few occasions when he really needed to grit his teeth and fire back.

McCrory is much the same, ''it's a 50-50 fight'' or ''it's gonna be a humdinger''.

It's a recurring theme with all sports on Sky really, the established commentators are generally ****.

 

Some of the Irish lads will know better than I, but I heard a story about how Graham Souness did a bit of TV work over there and was surprised by how straight with their opinions over there and he took a leaf out of their book when he came back over here.

If that's true, it's no surprise that Barry Mc and Steve Collins are as honest as they are.

It's great tbh, more the better.

 

Collins was class, no nonsense straight talker, I hope Sky get him in more often - a real breath of fresh air. Barry makes excellent points and always seems to have done his homework. But, he interrupts too much and has to have the last word.

Jim Watt was excellent again last weekend, great commentator and Matt Macklin is emerging as a very good pundit, really good insight on the technical aspects of the fight and he talks well.

 

I wonder if Jim Watt is still worried about the 15 pounds Peterson gained between fight time and the weigh in...

Atleast when Barry gives his opinion, whether it be right or wrong, you know THAT'S HIS OPINION. Too many of the SKY pundits are company men trying to sugar coat everything to make the network look more favourable. I mean is it too much to ask for a pundit who gives his OWN opinions that are no obscured by a biased agenda?

Agree. You could tell a mile off what he was saying to Groves on that Ringside episode was laced with his favouritism toward De Gale, that he thought De Gale was gonna beat him.

 

It was more that after the fight he set about diminishing what Groves had done rather than just say "I got it wrong."

 

This - there's not enough 'pundits' who are prepared to say this. They try and weasel out of it or blatantly lie.

 

Again, Barry led the way. He picked Lacy over Calzaghe and after Joe did his work, Barry said “I got it wrong, sorry Joe!”
