Vote on whether a ref should be able to stop a fight without a tap. It's a double edged sword. Do you think a ref should be able to stop a fight if it is clear the fighter cannot escape? or on the fighters head be it. IF they don't tap, they know the consequences! Should a ref perhaps step in on bone breaking subs? chokes will put you to sleep and after your 45-60 day suspension, you are fine. Seems to be alot of discussion in different threads because of the Big Nog break, so I wanted to consolidate it to one thread.
No. It should be up to the fighter to tap or the corner to throw in a towel. There's a reason you're meant to tap. This would raise too much controversy, especially in RNC's and probably Kimura's.
not at the professional level...it's the fighter's job to know when they are f'ed and tap...and no, it isn't like a TKO stoppage where the fighter is unconscious
I don't think this is practical, it wouldn't work. Maybe a better option would be a heavy fine and suspension if you break a limb. This would encourage people to try and hold subs and elicit a tap rather than try to push through for a break. If the guy refuses to tap, deal with it, move on. A sub artist having to release a sub which hasn't elicited a tap is no worse a scenario than guys like Wanderlei and Shogun seeing an opportunity for a soccer kick to the face and not being allowed to do it. There has to be rules, and if that makes it more difficult for any particular type of fighter, deal with it. Wandy and Shogun and co did.
I disagree. It's my own feeling on it that they have to think up something to avoid what happened on Saturday happening again. It's terrible for the sport IMO.
OK, I can see from this post and your post on the other thread about Brazilians and North Americans that you're not thinking of this issue in an objective way at all, you're too concerned with petty likes/dislikes of certain fighters and certain nationalities of fighter. Thus, not worth bothering with. :good
...:huh But it's a legitimate point. Nog got his arm broken because of his pride. You're saying if a fighter attempts to finish the fight and breaks his opponents arm because he doesn't want to tap he should be fined. It's nonsense. So in that case any fighter can just fight through the pain and not tap and eventually the other guy will have to release the hold. Do you want to introduce a rule where if the guy gets to the ropes and grabs it the referee can break the hold too?
I am thinking of it very objectively. If you are trapped, it's YOUR job to let the other guy know. Nog didn't do that. That is Nog's fault. I actually like Nog more than Mir...and I'm a huge Royce fan, so um...take your b/s elsewhere.
How is this different from the scenario Wandy and Shogun faced after coming over from Pride? They would see an opportunity to finish a fight with soccer kicks to the head, but because the rules were changed to make the fights a bit less brutal, they had to hold back, and let the fight go longer and/or get dragged back into a fight. I don't see any difference between that scenario and this one, except you are accustomed to no soccer kicks now, but you're not accustomed to seeing people release subs if they cannot elicit a tap. I never said this was a perfect solution at all, just trying to think of an idea to avoid what happened on Saturday, as I think it was really bad for our sport and shouldn't happen again if possible. JMHO.
