I think there's more to it than that. An elite college football player, especially a defensive linebacker, has to have extremely strong legs, an abundance of fast-twitch muscle cells, and very good reflexes. These are all major attributes in boxing.

Add to that the work ethic that any athlete has who actually made it to that level.

It's a wonder there haven't been more crossover successes. Maybe that's because most crossover athletes don't make the switch until they are older and have failed at their first sport. Mitchell had to leave football at only 21 years old due to an injury.

sorry, but they evidently are cousins (see ESPN article). Are you an authority on the issue? i.e. are you close personal friends with Sultan and/or Timur?

out of his post you chose only to respond to the fact he dosnt believe that they are not cousins..lol..im fairly certain there is an article on a site in which one of the partys confirms they are indeed not related...

why are you insisting on this point?

http://www.boxinginsider.com/interviews/talkin-boxing-with-timur-ibragimov/

Boxinginsider: Your cousin Sultan seems like a devastating puncher. He seems to punch even harder than you…
Timur Ibragimov: “Yes. Yes he punching hard.”

1st of all i want to know why it even matters if he is sultans cousin.does that mean he is somewhat of a boxing legend because he is his cousin..and 2ndly it has been strongly suggested he was told to use sultans name to promote his own.but in the context of this thread it means **** all.at the end of the day your making some big deal out of a guy who was a footballer who became a boxer with limited to no experiance..there are **** loads of examples to pluck holes in your theory yet you can only seem to defend the fact that sultan might indeed be timurs cousin lol...**** off:beer

No, actually, I made little of the fact that they appear to be cousins. Several others, including yourself, insisted on disputing the relation.

Now you're suggesting that Timur is fraudulently claiming Sultan as a cousin in order to promote his career?

TO ADD-

Tyson first laced a pair of gloves at 13....at 16 he was messing up Holmes sparring partners at 20 he was the best heavy in the world, and considered one of the best head to head fighters ever.........thats a total of 7 years.

G. Foreman took up boxing at 17, took gold at 19, was champ at 24 in the GOLDEN ERA.

Seth Mitchell had a natural instinct to fight, over the last 4/5 years he has honed that to and just beat his first contender type opponent, before that were low level journeyman.

If Seth beats top 10 guys, becomes champion...yeah ok but so far thats it.

Exactly and fighting is about fighting. It is not about how fast you run or ho much weight you lift....Joe Frazier was a terrible athlete but a great fighter. Eddie Chambers looks like ****, but has alot of skills, Eddie has a small head and hands, pudgy body, and short for heavyweight...yet he boxes like top star, Jimmy Young looked like ****...but could box.

Its about the individual, not some gross generalization.

Tye Fields is 6'9 and 270 of muscles, M. Grant is 6'7 and 260 pounds of Muscle, L. Whitaker is 6'8 and 250 pounds...these stats sound awesome...yet they were fringe contenders..

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

So he has been around boxing for alot younger.

Its so funny, people dont you remember school? The hardest kid wasnt the biggest everytime out he was just the best fighter...some people know how to fight and others dont, some start on a high level....its human instinct.

Playing golf or tennis has nothing to do with natural instincts.

Yeah, if a guy can pick up gloves at age 25 and 5 years later destroy the 30th best heavyweight in the world it shows that the current heavyweight talent pool is a complete farce.

It would be preposterous to assume that this could be done in any other sport with the possible exception of javelin throwing. And if Seth Mitchell became the 30th best javelin thrower in the world it would speak volumes about just how good the international javelin scene is right now.

This is what I think aswell. Just think if Cuba, Eastern Europe those guys werent allowed to box professionally before.

Western Europe like UK and Germany were behind, as the best gym were in North America.

Just look at British heavyweights in the last 20 years-

Frank Bruno 6'3 250pounds
Danny Williams 6'1 1/2 270 pounds
H. Akinwande 6'7 250 pounds
Gary Mason 6'2 240 pounds
David Haye 6'3 210 pounds
Herbie Hide 6'2 210 pounds
Lennox Lewis 6'5 245 pounds

Thats 7 top heavyweights.....now look throughtout british heavyweight history and compare........last 20 years have been huge for british heavyweights.

New breed - T. Fury, D. Price, D. Chisora....A. Joshua

The jury is still out on Mitchell as of now. Hopefully he'll be stepping it up again, and we can learn more.

Good post.

PS- Although I do think this is a fairly weak era for the HW's. ANd after reading this thread, I feel like I'm in the twilight zone.

I fail to see any relevance whatever to that post. So I'm not sure why you're so excited about it.
