high skill and other attributes can make up for a deficit in athletic ability.

Other sports are so saturated with skilled/athletic/talented/effective players that there is no room for Joe Shot-knees to walk off the street and school the the 30th ranked player in the league.

Why all the hate for the OP?

A bunch of you are stomping on him for saying Mitchell is a good HW, but he actually said exactly the opposite. Try re-reading his original post.

    Duh.

FWIW, I'm not a big Mitchell fan, but he is doing pretty well for a guy who switched sports. Given the massive failures of other football players to become boxers, and also the fact that he has a bad knee, I'd say Mitchell is actually pretty impressive. He'll probably never be champion, but he's dedicated & a warrior, has enough offensive skills to shake up the division, & he certainly deserves some respect.

    - And tell me you're not looking forward to his next fight?

Just about everything has been said in this thread and all I can add is some FACTS about the Ibragimov name thing. The cousins angle was simply a marketing ploy by a manager when they started fighting consistantly in U.S. venues.

Sultan is ethnic Dagestani and Timur is an Uzbek. The family name Ibragimov is as common in that part of the world as Johnson is in the States.

When did all that come out?

Timur's wiki page still has old info, then:

"Ibragimov is from [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uzbekistan"]Uzbekistan[/ame]. He is the [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cousin"]cousin[/ame] of former WBO Heavyweight Champion [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sultan_Ibragimov"]Sultan Ibragimov[/ame], although Sultan is a native of [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dagestan"]Dagestan[/ame]. Both of Ibragimov's parents are of Turkic origin, and his father is from the Khorezm region. Ibragimov himself is an [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uzbek_people"]Uzbek[/ame] [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turkish_people"]Turk[/ame] and a [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muslim"]Muslim[/ame].[1][2]"

The two sources that Wikipedia cites for that paragraph are both dead links. :think

Earlier I posted a link to an interview with Timur in which he refers to Sultan as his cousin.

Could well have been a marketing ploy, but until Timur and Sultan come clean I will continue to call them cousins.

    I am actually.

First of all, Sultan is from Rostov on Don, Russia and Timur is from Uzbekistan, that's two different countries.
Second of all, I have had a chance to converse with people who know Sultan personally, and they were also curious so they asked the question, and the answer was : " whole "cousin" thing is just an attempt at extra publicity. "
Third of all, I watched their interview, in Russian, a long while back, where they confirmed not being related.

PS: My last name is Ibragimov too. Do you think I'm their cousin?

About five years ago some guys on here did a bit of digging and uncovered the "cousins" angle. Many peoples from Southern Russia and Central Asia have a signifigant Turkic component to their cultures and if one goes back far enough they might have some very distant relation but cousin is a reach.

Hell; If we go back far enough we are all related.

Tashkent. What does that have to do with anything? Do you chose to ignore all inconvenient facts? Why did you try to steer clear of my post by showering an insignificant detail with attention?

would you, as a noble Ibragimov, consent to fraudulently claiming a blood relation with your namesake for the purposes of some sort of marketing gimmick?

Let Sultan and Timur come on ESB and clear the air. Until then, I will not allow their character to be impugned by unsubstantiated allegations.

He probably thinks you are related to Putin, Kruschev and Stalin, although they were all different ethnicities.

I was hoping Vysotsky(ESB poster) would chime in on this thread. He would have a field day on many levels with this one.

Here's what I want to know:

In the four major professional sports leagues of North America (NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL), there are more white athletes (1814, approximately) than black athletes (1551, approximately).

So, the question is this: Despite the potentially-faulty assumption that the NFL and NBA are harboring supposedly-great latent boxing/heavyweight boxing talent, is the truth really that there could be more non-African-American boxing/heavyweight boxing talent being absorbed by the four major North American sports leagues?

That is, are the four major North American sports leagues actually "draining" more non-African-American potential boxing talent than they are supposedly "draining" African-American talent?
