I actually think that is a good comparison as far as talent. I could see Canelo becoming a Cotto level fighter not an ATG like Floyd or Pac
Canelo has quicker hands, better defense, and is still young and learning. If Canelo can keep the dedication, I can see him being better. Cotto is this Era's Quartey... The difference being that this era is less talented.
he'll pass cotto up in skill....even right now if they fought it would be an amazingly close fight imo. in a few years tho canelo will be better than the current cotto
Cotto has shown great boxing skills, even fighting with an injure shoulder with some of the best for almost four years:deal His only two loses were to Margarito who he avenge and a loss that will forever be in question. His second lost was to a guy who is going down as one of the greatest and fought Cotto at the right time with all the demands and personal problems Cotto was dealing with. Lets not forget a guy who has also refuse random testing:deal Alvarez is good but has yet to be put with an opponent his own size and also how will he react when the time comes and gets put in deep water. How will he react when he is not the bigger guy or the fastest or strongest in the ring or when his opponent actually is better in some areas than him. Cotto has proven he could come back from tough oppoents and defeat them. When people said Mosley and Judah had to much speed and fast for him, Cotto outbox them. He defeated the bigger guys like Margarito and even a guy like Mayorga who is always a threat. Came back from tough fights Clottey and Torres. Alvarez has not had any fights like Cotto yet to be compare to him. Defeating guys like Hatton or Jose Cotto doesnt mean anything.
You are comparing Cotto's career feats to Canelo's current Feats who is just 21, which is very unfair as Canelo still has a career left and Cotto is close to his end with about a few more fights left and a cashing out of PAC reamatch. Also Cotto lost to a great fighter in PAC, but that doesn't mean he ranks highly because of it as he pretty much got destroyed... We know who he lost to but we also know who he beat, and who he beat doesn't even earn him a spot in the HOF. Also Canelo's greatest wins to me as of now are Rhodes and Cintron, all the others are minor accomplishment I mean he does have some good names in his record and at 21 and fighting so often he should get a lot of credit Molina became a big man at 154 for outboxing cintron, Canelo completely destroyed him and outmuscled him to a tKO... The Rhodes fight is one of the best because he fought his Mandatory and when it was first announced most said that This Rhodes guy who is bigger then Canelo who had campaiged at 160 and shown good skills that Canelo would just duck him and GBP would protect him from Rhodes as Canelo was finally facing a guy who could bang and was actually his same size and bigger... Canelo completely destroyed him and controled him from start to finish and showed great skill in doing so winning many fans... He still has a lot left... and currently the skills he shows will just keep improving. Plus he gots a lot of power in both hands... we shall see. Also I could care less about Canelo gifted belt as many get things like this to make their fighters Special as GBP did, and as TR did with PAC and his 8th world title against Margarito that was basically gifter as well, or Morales 4th title... it happens, and I was just as enraged with GBP as many others were because they were just bringing hate to a young talented kid and it was gonna create a lot of haters and it, it also made him the cash cow at 154 and everyone wants him, he IS HBO's golden prospect, and brings in a lot of fans so the belt wasn't such a bad thing $$$ wise... just credibility wise he didn't earn it and i agree with that.
I don't know, Cotto was a ****ing beast (still is, but not quite what he once was) but Alvarez has some amazing combinations, some of the best I've seen in a while. Plus he has the youth and experience. I need to see him DEEP in the trenches first before I can judge
