Al Haymon profiled by the NY times

I see Al Haymon on HBO in a seat near ringside at all the fights of his boxers. His expression was funny when Martinez KOed Williams.

Watch it in HD - Al Haymon became upset towards the end of round ten and leaves his seat and goes over to tell Arreola's trainer to stop the fight and the trainer nods "yes". Haymon didn't want his "property" (Arreola) to become permanently damaged.

 

Seeing that he made his bones promoting R&B and early hip-hop, blacks are probably more comfortable with him and he more comfortable with them.

 

He promotes none black fighters too for the record

 

I don't doubt this at all. However, the biggest complaint I hear about Haymon is that his fighters get paid too much money. I would think more fighters would lining up to have this guy manage them.

Consider Lamon Brewster. Starting in 1999, he was bankrolled by Sam Simon, a boxing fan and a co-creator of “The Simpsons.” Simon said he paid Brewster about $50,000 annually on top of his fight purses and allowed Brewster to live rent-free in a house he owned.

Their relationship went beyond money, Simon said. So when Brewster defeated Wladimir Klitschko to capture the World Boxing Organization’s heavyweight title in April 2004, Simon pronounced it “the happiest night of my life,” like “having one horse and winning the Kentucky Derby.”

Soon after, Brewster talked about adding Haymon to the team as an adviser. He also began working with Don King. Simon said Haymon did not return his phone calls. At his next fight, five months later in Las Vegas, Brewster called Haymon and handed the phone to Simon. Haymon told Simon, “You’re out of a job.” A contract was then slid under the door of Simon’s hotel room. His commission had been reduced to 1 percent.

“It was like a bad boxing movie,” Simon said. “I blamed Haymon. I considered it the greatest betrayal of my life.”

Like Don King, I am sure he is not afraid to use his race to his advantage in exploiting others. Fighters should be careful. The only color guys like this are interested in is green.

 

If that mother ****er only gave Lamont 50k for his championship fight he played himself.

The only people who complain are promotors who are made because Haymon takes their cut.

I think Haymon's personal connection with his fighters, limits him from making to large a stable. It seems to me, just like with his music days, that he gets close to his clients.

 

The guy promotes Lil wayne and Beyounce tours you know how many accountants are on his ass in his businesses.

One of the more interesting parts of the article was how Haymon stole Lamon Brewster from Simon. I even remembering seeing that Simon guy on 60 Minutes talking about Brewster. He took great pride in promoting him and seemed to take care of him.

why risk putting up the money to make a fight since it seems like he can just sit back, make a few calls and get that 30%.

 

No he paid him a 50k salary on top of purses. But he messed up by not getting Brewster contracted down, no doubt

 

Beyonce also fired Haymon's ass for conspiring with her dad to defraud her.
