Would you say Floyd Mayweather Junior is the CURRENT linear welterweight champion?

    Stonehands,

Can you explain why Cotto Margarito or Margarito Mosley didn't fill the vacancy created by Floyd's retirement?

    Because...

    #1 vs. #4
#1 vs. #3 (And #2 Cotto isn't Mosley or Marg's flesh and blood brother)

    :nut

Maybe you should apply your logic from the Wlad thread to the equation. Or are you just being a clueless biased **** again?

Waits..for the 100th..crackhead response that is really code for "you are owning me and I have no answer"

And who's rankings are we using here? The Ring's?

I'd like to know where ESPN and Yahoo sports had Margarito and Mosley ranked on the day of their fight.

Dan at ESPN had Cotto #2 as well.

Who gives a **** about Yahoo?

What other welterweight rankings are you interested in? Your boy wasn't #2, deal. Cotto still had the win over Mosley who had been largely inactive since, nobody serious was going to leap from him over Cotto in the rankings.

Do you only recognize Dan and Yahoo's rankings, now?

No, but I also don't consider the Ring's rankings to be some kind of Gospel or final authority on the matter.

IIRC, Yahoo sports comes up with their rankings based on a consensus of polled boxing media. I trust that more than what GoldenBo... Er umm... the Ring magazine has to say.

Those are the annual ratings. You have to look at the "as of date" on the ratings page and if both are 1 and 2, either order, just before they fought, then I'm off. But I don't think I'm off.

Well according to Brec that's March 2009 and Marg beat Cintron and Cotto after that before facing Mosley

Mosley was largely considered THE CHAMP

Well, I'd argue that The Ring's rankings have to be noted as the oldest, most reliable, and most authoritive of the rest.

I happen to go with 1 vs 2 for vacant thrones though -their allowances make no damn sense to me, and they allow room for nefarious influences to get involved. If vacant thrones aren't filled by the two BEST fighting it out then it shouldn't be filled. It makes no damn sense to let 1 fight 3 or 6 or whatever. 1 fights 2. If 2 is inactive or moves up in weight or has refuses to fight 1, then he should be moved down to 3! It's pretty easy to do, but it is made hard because boxing is overrun with jerk-offs and boxing fans are just as loony for enabling it.

That doesn't mean that The Ring wasn't off its rocker sometimes -they had Dempsey rating fighters by himself for a spell in the 30s I think and of course they had the scandal in the 70s. Sometimes they didn't even recognize divisions that should have been recognized (Nigel did this in the 90s).

BUT... they've been the best we have. I traced every division's succession back to the first Queensberry championship bout and for most of boxing history in the 20th century, you'd be remiss to go with some other ranking body.

THAT BEING SAID, your quip about Golden Boy is on the money. The Ring era may be ending now that their offices have been coerced into Golden Boy's bathroom. They still have a rankings panel which is nice, but that panel only assists the editors, and the editors have a boss who has a vested interest in his own fighters. Big problems there.

Stone, you was able to trace the bw successions via wilde right? That's one of the more common errors on lineages i've found on the internet; they often omit him from the lineage.

It was a low blow dq and ertle did claim the championship right up until his loss to moore.

I think the Ring and Dan is on the money in this instance. Mosley had not fought at WW since losing to Cotto. Mosley had no claim to be ranked over Cotto until he beat the man who beat him in Marg.

If Yahoo is your gospel, find a source youself where they rank Mosley as #2.

It also looks like Yahoo only does P4P rankings...so I'm afraid its Bronco time..

Call me bronco, say sorry bronco.

    You ****ing suck.
