One of the benefits of being a short(er) guy is that there is less to fill out on your body, creating an illusion of sorts of fuller muscle bellies. Liston probably has equal muscle mass, but his freakishly long arms detract from the appearance. Extreme example: Compare the 5-1 1/2" Walcott in my avatar to the 147-version of Thomas Hearns. One looks like a tank, the other an ostrich.
I always believed and still do Sonny was one of the most gifted &troubled heavyweight champs. MAY HE REST IN PEACE.
Liston, one on one in a purely physical contest of strength, would take second place to nobody, in my opinion...maybe with possible exception of George Foreman, but even that wouldn't be guaranteed.
I'd agree with that. Tyson has all of the physical dimensions on which to build a mighty impressive physique (no homo), but it has so little bearing on strength. I'm sure it was partly due to energy conservation, but he was always easily moved. Liston foregoes most of the aesthetic details and has the brute strength and force.
I like Liston's image of the white robe, the towel over his head, better than Tyson's black robe, black shoe, robeless thing.
The more you read and see of Liston, the harder it is to harbor any negative feelings about him. I personally always loved him anyway, but from the perspective even of a detractor, I just cant see it. The story of him going back to Philadelphia as World Champ and eagerness to represent well and even preparing a speech to be greeted by absolutely nobody is some sad ****.
I give Patterson credit for doing what SRR and Johnson wouldnt for Charley Burley and Sam Langford, but he was still robbed due to the length of time D'Amato successfully avoided it. Liston KO1 Patterson each and every single last time. Sonny cleaned out the division and sat as No. 1 contender for 3+ years and lost at least that many for his reign as champion. People say well whats the difference if he wouldve been battering the same contenders. A very clear one considering one of the first marks they cite against him is "1 title defense". Liston was the premiere HW in the world from 58-59 to '64 and shouldve heen champion over that time span.
