Has today's HW division ever been this good?

In my opinion, the HW division has never been stronger than it is today. It's a result of better medicine, nutrition, advances in the science of boxing, better training. The world produces giants today, and the Iron Curtain is down, adding millions of people to the pool of potential fighters.

So, of course, I get tired of hearing today's HW division fighters continuously maligned, and the same old chant "The HW division has gone to hell".

I've been watching boxing steady since 1959, when I was 15. I remember the thrilling trilogy of fights between Ingemar Johansson and Floyd Patterson. But I don't think those two light cruiserweights could compete as heavyweights today.

By the same token, I hate to see posters on this forum bad-mouthing the old time greats. I love watching the videos of Ali and Foreman, Marciano and Baer, Galento and Louis, Walcott, Moore and Schmelling, Patterson and Johansson. Just hearing their names brings a good feeling to me. They are my old friends.

I am posting this new thread and hoping that it can be objective, but also respectful. Anyone who climbs through those ropes and tries his best deserves respect, whether it was 1911 or 2011. :good

I agree. That is why I think Kell Brook is better than SRR. People think SRR is great and don't realise what a monster Kell Brook is from better medicine, nutrition, advances in the science of boxing and better training of today. If there were a fight tomorrow between a Prime SRR and Kell, Kell would beat him down in 2 rounds. But all the nostalgia and wot not blind them to the truth.

The main bad thing about todays HW landscape is that the K-bro's are that - brothers.

Imagine if Wlad and Vitali were fierce rivals.

you have 2 champions who'll never fight eachother, and then it's a huge difference between the rest, add the poor fact that none of the top contenders actually fight eachother, which would surely make interesting non- title fights, every top ten contender fights a couple of B class boxers, gets a K payday, and he's done, so in short, the division is in serious trouble

We're clearly living amongst a stacked division these days with two ATG's and host of worthy challengers. Quite clearly if anyone thinks this era is '****' he is without doubt some sort of **** with an agenda, plain and simple.

    Vitali Klitschko
    Wlad Klitschko
    Byrd
    Peter
    Chagaev
    Haye
    Solis
    Brock
    Helenius
    Valuev
    Toney
    Povetkin
    Adamek
    Ibragimov
    Brewster
    Sanders
    Thompson
    Chambers
    Juan Carlos Gomez
    Ustinov

The older fighters fighting at a high level past their best.
    Rahman
    Briggs

The next batch of dangerous young fighters.
    Boystov
    Wilder
    Mitchell
    Fury
    Price
    Gerber
    Perez
    Dimitrenko

If anybody thinks a good % of these names mentioned couldn't win a World title in a weaker era than this one then they must be on heroin or something. Yes true, some of these names may never match what ATG fighters like Henry Cooper achieved but to call the above '****' really just goes to show you don't even watch the division.

Let's look at the contenders facing each other outside of the ATG Klitschko brothers.

    [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6wiChMA8F1Y"]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6wiChMA8F1Y[/ame]

And look what you see, cracking end to end fights against evenly matched opponents that swing one way then to the other just like "the good old days."

I believe Wlad and Vitali would be competative and strong in any era. The current group are bigger but would struggle to make the top 50 of Hwt chanpions and contenders of the past 50 years. The hwt division has always been thin in terms great fighters when compared to the lighter weights.

I definitely think new training methods and nutrition mean the quality of athlete CAN be better today than historically, but a couple of things stop that with the heavies. In the US, if you've got the build, you're not likely to be taking up boxing, you're playing american football or going to MMA. And then as Damian said - contenders don't fight each other these days like they used to. If you don't put yourself through regular, intense camps and then learn your craft against tough opposition in the ring you're not going to reach your potential. That's a fundamental issue with over protected heavyweight prospects today. Everyone is too scared to risk the '0' and put the Klitschko payday back by a few months and therefore their technique and experience is sub-standard when they get their shot.

Care to list examples when Arreola, Solis, Chambers lost because they ran out of gas in their respective fights?
