Regardless of the stoppage, I am of the opinion that Cotto was on his way to a UD win. Fact is, Cotto's gameplan was to target the weakened eye and get the fight stopped, which is exactly what happened. Had Marg's eye not been weakened, I reckon Cotto would probably have focused more on the body which would have at least contributed something to Marg's fatigue in the later rounds. The fight demonstrates that Cotto had a gameplan, boxed to it and got the result he was after. Take the eye swelling away completely, I still can't see Marg TKO'ing Cotto in the final 3 rounds. May have been a long 3 rounds for Cotto but he had enough in the tank to see him through to a decision win.
It's a shame, though, that his plan WAS to punish the eye. We would all have liked to see Cotto punish the ENTIRE Margo, for 12 rounds, with a "no excuses" Margo unable to hurt him. That would have been a much more satisfying win.
Take another look. Cotto was in the pocket and he was constantly landing on Margritos left eye. Cotto had no problems going to to toe.
If one of those fights were 15 rounds and things like being able to see weren't mandatory and using plaster was allowed Margarito would have won. Obviously a plot by NYSAC to keep Margarito down.
Look people He was getting to Cottos body. Just as the first fight when everybody had Cotto winning by a milestone all the internet sites including this one on the RBR had him clearly winning and allegedy dominating. In the ninth he got hit to the body a few times and felt it. I think anything could have happened in the last 3 rounds. A fighter who believes in himself is the most dangerous fighter, Margo still belived in himself you could see the body language. Anything can happen in a fight even when you are getting your ass whoooped. It shows who has more hear, determinatin and is a better man, I take margos heart over cottos any day. The big difference here also was that cotto seemed alot stronger than margo, not punching wise but in general. Physically he looked stronger. He must of had a good training camp. I give his trainer credit, but cottos mental toughness is still the same. I would have loved to see the final 3 rounds with a fresh looking margo and a tired looking Cotto.
Although I would rather that the spectre of the eye wasn't there, but I guess another way to look at it was that everyone knew Cotto's gameplan was to target the eye.... he even said so before the fight. He went in, did what he said he was going to and there was nothing Margarito could do about it.
Oh, the excuses. Should have, would have, could have ... if margo only had plaster the fight would have been just like the first fight. Fact he's 0-3 against quality opponents after being caught. He's a bum.
